Reporting to the Director, Equitable Learning, Health & Wellness, the Manager, Equitable Learning is responsible for leading accessibility planning and the provision of the highest quality of care possible for Mohawk College students who have, or suspect they have, a disability. This includes leadership and direction to staff working in Accessible Learning Services and secondary support to the Health & Wellness team. The position is accountable for ensuring the institution meets all Ministry and Ontario Human Rights requirements when providing accessibility services to students.


The incumbent is responsible for gathering data and completion of ministry reporting while serving as a resource to college management on matters of accommodation for staff and students in relation to Human Rights as requested.


What you'll be doing:




Supervision and Leadership



Provides leadership and direction to a multi-disciplinary team. Hires, orients, schedules, supervises and evaluates the performance of the Accessible Learning Services staff and practicum students. Oversees daily operations and service delivery within Accessible Learning Services. Supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of accessibility program plans, regularly reviews staffing capacity, and adjusts service allocation to effectively meet student support needs within existing resources. Oversees intake, accommodation planning, and support processes for students with disabilities, ensuring timely and equitable access to academic accommodations and services. Monitors intake and triage protocols, high risk and crisis response, service demand and staffing needs, and appropriate resource allocation, including emergency after-hours support as needed. Collaborates across the college to ensure equitable access to education for students with disabilities by fostering interdisciplinary partnerships between Accessible Learning Services, teaching faculty, and other key stakeholders. Ensures adherence to best practice standards and implements procedures and workflows that ensure compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Ontario Human Rights Code, and institutional accessibility policies. Develops appropriate external and internal partnerships to meet the accessibility needs of the Mohawk College student population. Maintains on-going relationship with Academic departments and builds relationships with colleagues to further the awareness of available services. Ensures staff compliance with professional standards, institutional policies, and regulatory guidelines and promotes continuous improvement through training, professional development, and reflective practice. Introduces new and innovative services and programming that align with departmental and institutional planning.

Data and Metric Collection



Accurately and effectively gathers, collects, compiles and analyses data and presents monthly statistics for Accessible Learning Services that help the department, and the institution, make sound decisions regarding student supports. Accountable for the compilation of the annual Ministry report including updates to service levels and data. Oversees the management and evolution of the data record system for Accessible Learning Services, incorporating updates and assessing potential system advancements. Provides support to the Director in managing relationships with external database provider, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of student files is maintained.

Student Support and Intervention



Respond to urgent or complex student situations by meeting with students directly; consulting with colleagues managing sensitive or challenging situations; and/or participating in case management as necessary. Manages case consultations involving complex student needs, escalating high-risk or high-impact situations to the Director and collaborating with relevant departments as required and within professional expertise, advises on issues of risk and liability. Work to ensure appropriate treatment of confidential information through the use of informed consents. Advocate for students' ongoing needs by collaborating with internal and external partners to ensure access to support services.

Liaise with Internal and External Representatives and Organizations



Build and maintain relationships with organizations who serve people with disabilities (e.g. CNIB, March of Dimes, Canadian Hearing Society etc.) to increase resources, knowledge and skills. Represent the College at internal and external meetings, conferences, and working groups as needed. Serves as the Accessible Learning Services representative on internal committees as needed to advocate for accessibility and inclusive education practices. Participates as the ALS representative on institutional committees, working groups, and accessibility planning initiatives to advocate for equitable and inclusive education practices and provide subject matter expertise. Liaises and collaborates with external stakeholders including other post-secondary institutions and the Ministry's Accessibility Office to support the implementation of new accessibility standards and directives for students with disabilities.

General Administration and Planning



Monitors and tracks the ALS budget in collaboration with the Director, ensuring efficient use of resources and alignment with operational goals. Coordinates service and program evaluation to inform programming, service delivery, and broader student success and retention efforts. Investigates and responds to complaints in Accessible Learning Services. Develops annual business plans, annual reports, and assists in strategic planning.

What you'll bring to the role:



4 year degree. Psychology, Disability Studies or Education preferred. 5 years of experience leading and managing interdisciplinary teams in public, private sectors and/or the post-secondary academic, union environment including supervision of staff, and working with accommodation of persons with disabilities. Related experience in the field of accessibility may also be considered. Demonstrates high skill in assessing urgent situations, managing critical incidents, and providing effective and timely responses, all while exercising exceptional judgment and sound decision-making under pressure. Relevant recent experience in the direct provision of disability related services, specifically with the emerging adult population. Demonstrates a deep understanding of equity principles, college policies, and relevant legislation. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of funding sources that support students with disabilities, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and its regulations, as well as related legislation including the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms--particularly as they pertain to the legal protections and rights of persons with disabilities. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to handle sensitive matters. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of case management and various ways to engage students with disabilities in services. Budget forecasting, planning and management experience. Experience and/or training in outcome-based program/service planning and evaluation. Proven ability to supervise and manage the work of others, including addressing performance issues. The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
