Catholic Social Services is currently recruiting for one, full time, forty (40) hours per week Maintenance Technician (Plumber/Gas-fitter) to join our talented team!

Job Summary:

The Plumber/Gas-fitter is responsible for performing a variety of skilled repairs, installations and troubleshooting for Catholic Social Services facilities. This position performs a variety of duties, in the areas of plumbing/gas-fitting and also in general maintenance. The Plumber/Gas-fitter performs repairs and maintenance on boilers, heating systems, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) found within our Agency buildings supporting the clients we serve.

About the Role:

Primary job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Tend to service calls
  • Tend to the maintenance and preventative maintenance programs, including maintaining and cleaning of all plumbing equipment and general repairs
  • Propose changes or modifications to plans to enhance operation and efficiency of systems plans and or specifications for residential and commercial buildings
  • Ensure accuracy and completion of assigned tasks and projects
  • Keep detailed and accurate maintenance reports and documentation
  • Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology, compliance and repair techniques
  • Train site staff on basic mechanical systems
  • Collaborate with other colleagues during renovations
  • Recommend repairs and adjustments to the field Supervisor as required
  • Provide technical advice and training to other maintenance staff as needed
  • Perform maintenance tasks of a complex nature in areas as assigned
  • Coordinate in conjunction with the IAM Coordinator, site visits with the program services and assess the work to be done, determining what materials are required, purchase materials for completing the job and cleanup of the work site
  • Support the team with all maintenance service throughout the Agency
  • Act as a resource person to other staff members regarding means of avoiding maintenance problems or means of troubleshooting maintenance
  • Provide support on changes, trends, innovations in the field of trades in general and how they may be implemented in the Agency's maintenance function
  • Complete requested inspection reports and other required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot equipment and systems (e.g. ventilation, boilers, etc.)
  • Represent the Agency in a professional and courteous manner
  • Support vendors when applicable in a professional manner
  • Operate Agency vehicle in a safe and courteous manner, including regular service and repairs as needed
  • Perform any other duties deemed necessary by the IAM department
  • Be a positive, participatory team member; effectively communicating program concerns and possible solutions
Education and Qualifications:
  • Completed Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Journeyman Plumber with Gas fitter A certificate is required
  • Minimum 3 years' experience servicing boilers, hot water tanks and make up air units
  • Possess a valid driver's license
  • Willing and able to travel occasionally
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations in all plumbing areas (sinks, showers, tubs, etc.)
  • Highly flexible, with excellent interpersonal skills allowing effective work in a diverse working environment
  • Effective communication both verbally and in writing
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Computer literate
Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent understanding of HVAC systems
  • Experience working with power tools
  • Familiar with working in a boiler / mechanical environment
  • Basic knowledge, skill and work experience in: carpentry, plumbing, drywall repairs and other appropriate trade
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing
  • Ability to work on several projects concurrently
  • Ability to organize, and maintenance schedules and work orders in a changing daily environment
  • Exhibit initiative, responsibility, and flexibility
  • Possess a basic knowledge of safety systems and building code procedures
  • Strong communication and problem solving skills
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently
  • Proficiency in use of iPad, iPhone, Microsoft, Android operating system
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully and professionally at all times
Working Conditions:
  • Physical ability to lift up to 75lbs
  • Travel to the site and off-site locations will be required
  • Safety equipment will be required
  • Overtime and on-call on rotation system with other team members
  • Work both indoors and outdoors
