Position Overview
NVDPL is looking for a regular part-time Maintenance Person 1, to perform regular building/building systems maintenance and minor repairs, cleaning, janitorial, driving and delivery related functions.

Reporting to the Business Manager and working as a fully contributing member of the Library Staff, the Maintenance Person 1 position is part of the Library Building Maintenance Team supervised by the Building Services and Delivery Supervisor. This particular Maintenance Person 1 position is centered at Lynn Valley Library and serves all NVDPL Library Branches.
What you'll be doing
Aspects of the role will include:
Supports safe functioning of building systems and welcoming appearance of Library branches
Sweeps, washes, waxes, and polishes floors, and vacuums carpets
Dusts and cleans windows, doors, shelves, walls, fixtures, and ceilings etc.
Cleans and maintains washrooms and kitchen areas, and orders supplies
Cleans and sweeps outdoor steps and sidewalks, and clears snow and ice as required
Collects and disposes of refuse and supports recycling
Performs minor maintenance, repair tasks, and painting tasks as required
Dismantles and assembles shelves, desks and other furniture as required
Changes fluorescent tubes and light bulbs as required
Monitors and adjusts heating, hot water ventilation and air conditioning units; troubleshoots minor issues; coordinates system inspections and repairs
Assists with building security and fire safety checks; troubleshoots system alerts; coordinates system inspections and repairs; advises superiors of security matters and calls police and District bylaw officers as instructed, following vandalism
Drives library van and car to transport books and materials between Library branches on a regular delivery schedule
Sets up tables and chairs and moves furniture in support of programs and events
Acts as a back up to attend building emergencies during off-hours as required
What you'll need to succeed
Grade 12 High School Diploma
2-5 years experience providing maintenance or janitorial services
Sound knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work
Sound knowledge of and ability to perform routine facility maintenance and minor repair procedures
Sound knowledge of principles of operating heating, hot water, ventilation and air conditioning units
Valid BC Driver's Licence
WHIMIS Certificate from WCB
Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check
Dedicated to delivering outstanding customer service
Problem-solving skills with a solutions-oriented approach
Maintains a clean driving record
Skilled in clear and professional oral and written communication
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
Ability to work alone and under supervision
Ability to lift up to 20 lbs
It's great if you have
Certification related to building services and/or janitorial maintenance
Experience with Direct Digital Control (DDC) for building systems
Experience driving and making deliveries for an organization
Experience driving a full-size commercial cargo van
Knowledge of vehicle maintenance
The hourly pay rate for this unionized position starts at $27.30 (2024 rates), based on a 22.5-hour workweek, plus a generous benefits package. The regular schedule for this position is to be determined; however, the role requires availability 7 days a week with on-call responsibilities in the event of emergencies.
