Who we are
At Aquila, we invest in category-defining B2B/B2G software companies globally, acting as a thought-partner, striving for the success of our companies in the long term. We are a well-managed, profitable company that operates like a startup with the financial backing of a parent company. For our people, this means limitless possibilities.
We are unapologetically unique, pivoting to respond to the needs of the multiple markets we operate in. We have ambitious goals, and we're looking for genuine contributors with integrity, energy, flexibility, and loyalty. We are investing in building future leaders who can take an idea and make things happen.
Who we need
Reporting to the Head of M&A, we are looking for an Associate to join our growing global team. You will play a critical role in sourcing, evaluating, and executing acquisitions of vertical market software companies across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. This is a hands-on opportunity to work directly with C-level executives, owner-operators, and internal teams--gaining full exposure to the M&A lifecycle from initial prospecting through to post-acquisition integration.
In your first 6-9 months, you will develop a strong understanding of our KPIs and investment benchmarks, and become fully integrated into the team. You will build a deep appreciation for our acquisition philosophy and contribute insights that shape our future deals.
This is a full-time, hybrid role based in downtown Toronto, with 1-2 days per week in the office.
What's in it for you
Immediate growth and exposure. From day one, you will be immersed in live deals, gaining hands-on experience and autonomy to learn and apply our investment strategies and operating philosophies. You will work directly with the Head of M&A at Aquila as well as the rest of the M&A team, Aquila BD team, Aquila Portfolio Managers, C-level executives, and owner-operators of the businesses we acquire.
A unique environment. We are a highly active team managing a diverse portfolio of prospects. Despite the fast pace, we prioritize work-life balance, realistic deliverables, and encourage taking full advantage of vacation time. You will contribute to the full M&A lifecycle, collaborating with a high-energy investment team and senior leaders. With deals spanning global markets and a variety of software verticals, you will build a strong foundation as a value-driven investor.
Career development. We are committed to internal growth. This role is a launchpad for a challenging and rewarding career in M&A. As we scale over the next 12-18 months, new roles--including Senior Associate, Manager, and Director--will open, creating clear opportunities for advancement. You will be supported with the mentorship, training, and resources needed to grow with us.
What you will focus on:
Qualifying businesses.
You will collaborate with our business development team to identify vertical market software businesses that meet our strategic criteria and specific metrics. You will analyze target companies' financial and operational information, form investment strategies, and build detailed valuation models.
Creating engagement.
You will make investment pitches to senior investment and operating teams. You will work with owners, shareholders, advisors, and other stakeholders.
Transaction execution.
You will assist with the preparation and negotiation of offers and participate in the transaction execution process from start to finish, including performing commercial and financial due diligence, managing external advisors, facilitating management meetings, coordinating internal approval processes, and drafting investment memoranda, due diligence reports, and financial models.
What you bring:
The knowledge.
You have a background in accounting, corporate finance and development, investment banking or private equity. You may be coming from management consulting or an accounting firm. You have a strong business acumen and understand how to read financial statements, value businesses, and assess risk.
The consulting approach.
You have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You can nurture professional relationships and know how to gain trust, elicit key information, and influence without authority. You have the confidence to present to executives, lead remote calls, and build rapport, internally and externally. You thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and work just as well independently.
The mindset.
You take initiative, stay curious, and learn from feedback. You operate without ego, are open to learning, and are willing to make mistakes and grow from them. You are organized, analytical, and detail-oriented. You can shift your focus to meet the evolving priorities of the team.
The flexibility.
You are willing and able to occasionally travel internationally to work directly with potential acquisitions.
