The opportunity:



The University of Manitoba is looking for a Livestock Statistician. This position will use diverse data sets and apply specialized statistical expertise on designed (e.g., controlled feed trials) and observational (e.g., pre-recorded data collected for managerial purposes) data arising from livestock, poultry, and associated fields (e.g., feed production, food processing, manure management).

The primary objective of this position is to enhance the efficiency of our research data analysis pipeline, thereby contributing significantly to our broader goals of advancing research excellence and increasing the impact of our scientific work. The Livestock Statistician will work on the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from multi-disciplinary projects and assist with planning experiments and developing research proposals, with the potential for co-authorship in research publications.

In this role, this position will interact with graduate students and research staff to provide statistical consulting to ensure the robustness of our research methodologies and guarantee that our findings are grounded in sound statistical principles. This will include the creation of an agriculture centric manual and delivery of statistical training. These resources will focus on statistical methodologies and analytical techniques relevant to our research in Animal Science, providing an easy-to-reference guide/manual. Technical expertise in statistical methods specific to livestock, poultry, and associated fields and the ability to communicate complex statistical concepts to diverse audiences will be critical in this role.

The qualifications and experience we're looking for:



An MSc required in Natural Science disciplines, experimental statistics for livestock and related fields is preferred. A Ph D preferred in Natural Science disciplines and experimental statistics for livestock and related fields. Two years of directly related experience is required. Demonstrated experience working with datasets from livestock and related fields required. Experience in delivering training in the subject of experimental statistics required. A track record of articulating research findings and methodologies in clear, precise language that would be suitable for academic publications and grant proposals required. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Strong statistical skills, including understanding the complexity of relevant areas such as experimental design, mixed models, generalized linear models, or multivariate analysis specific to livestock and related fields is required. Excellent proficiency in R statistical software package is required. Experience in other packages (e.g., SAS, SPSS, Matlab) is required. Proven skills in managing, processing, and analyzing datasets of varying sizes, ensuring data integrity and accuracy throughout the research process is required. Exceptional communication skills in English, both written and verbal, are required. This includes explaining statistical concepts to non-specialists and effectively conveying complex information in teaching or supervisory roles in an accessible manner. Capacity to approach research challenges with a critical eye, providing solutions to unique statistical problems and contributing to research design and methodology is required. Ability to give effective oral presentations to both the scientific community and broader audiences, showcasing clear communication and engagement skills required. Demonstrated academic and scientific writing ability required. Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
