About the Murphy Centre
The Murphy Centre is a community-based organization providing high-quality academic, career, and personal development opportunities. In partnership with The Gathering Place (TGP) and funded by the Department of Education, our ACCESS to Learning program provides low-barrier, learner-centred instruction for TGP Guests.
Why this role matters
You'll help Guests build essential literacy, numeracy, digital, and life skills, boosting confidence and opening doors to employment, education, and daily independence.
What you will do
Promote and recruit for ACCESS to Learning at TGP
Conduct intake and baseline assessments; identify strengths and learning goals
Co-create engaging, individualized learning plans
Deliver 1:1 and small-group sessions
Facilitate learning in foundational literacy, numeracy, digital literacy, and life skills
Utilize trauma-informed, strengths-based approaches
Adapt materials and methods to diverse learning styles and abilities
Track attendance, progress, and outcomes; adjust instruction accordingly
Collaborate with TGP staff, Murphy Centre colleagues, and community partners.
Contribute to program evaluation, data quality, and continuous improvement.
Stay current with adult-learning best practices
What you bring (Required)
Bachelor's degree in Education, Adult Education, or related field.
Experience facilitating learning with adults
Strong communication, relationship-building, and learning-space management.
Demonstrated cultural sensitivity
Ability to support adults with complex needs
Solid organization and record-keeping; comfortable with MS Office.
Preferred
Familiarity with adult literacy assessment tools and individualized program planning.
Experience in trauma-informed practice, harm-reduction settings, or shelter/food-security environments.
Digital literacy teaching experience (e.g., device basics, email, online safety, forms).
Certifications such as Standard First Aid/CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, or Naloxone training (or willingness to obtain).
Work conditions & support
Primary worksite: The Gathering Place in St. John's.
Schedule: 37.5 hours/week, daytime.
