The YMCA Literary Services provides literacy and basic skills instruction to adults, 18 years of age and over. The Literacy Instructor will provide individual basic adult literacy training in areas of Communication, Numeracy and Computer Use as well as essential skills training. The instructor will report to the Site Manager. This is a part-time role with hours ranging from 10-30 hours per week.
In this role, you will:
Teach adult learners in the areas of basic reading, writing, mathematics, computer use, life and specific employment skills
Plan and provide instruction to ensure learner progress
Research current curricula and adapt as necessary for learners
Employ a broad range of appropriate teaching techniques and strategies for both in-person and virtual learning
Create learning plans for learners and maintain accurate records of learner progress
Provide a supportive and positive learning environment
Develop & implement creative ideas for promoting YMCA services to stakeholders in the Parry Sound area and across the broader department
Demonstrate strong support and commitment to the mission and core values of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka and the YMCA in Canada
You bring:
Knowledge of initial reading and writing principles and strategies
Experience with adult literacy and essential skills training
Good technical skills, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, Office 365, Social Media and Canva
Skilled with effective teaching using online platforms including Teams and Google Classroom
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong presentation and teaching skills
Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting persons with literacy and learning challenges
Post-secondary education in a teaching discipline appropriate for literacy and basic education instruction
Flexibility regarding assigned work hours
Willingness to participate in mandated training to be completed before or shortly after commencement of work including:
AODA Training
Health & Safety Awareness Training
Bill 168 (Violence & Harassment in the Workplace) Training
PCI Compliance
WHMIS
Child Protection Training
