About Us

The Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables manages the responsible development of the Province\'s mineral resource assets along with scientific support of public health and safety through regional mapping, water resource, and hazard mapping programs. Within the Branch, the Geological Survey Division includes a team of expert geoscientists who are responsible for delivering high quality, timely geoscience data, information, services, and support to a wide range of stakeholders, including all levels of government, industry, academia, and the public.

About Our Opportunity

The Geological Survey Division requires two library assistants for the summer of 2023. You will answer to the manager of Geoscience Information Services and will work closely with staff of the Natural Sciences Library. The Geological Survey Division has an extensive collection of publications (e.g. reports, maps) that need to be inventoried. This involves assessing documents and organizing them into streams, and collecting data such as available formats, storage location, and number of copies, as well some bibliographic data. This information will be recorded in a spreadsheet with the intention of being transferred to a professional database. Other tasks related to metadata collection and collection management may be assigned. This position is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

About You

To be successful in this role, you must be returning to a library-related program (e.g. MI, MLIS, or LIT) full time in the fall of 2023. A cover letter must be submitted with the application. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet applications is required. Experience with, or a course in, records management and/or archival techniques is an asset. A background in geology or an allied science, including research experience, is an asset.

You must be a self-starter who is able to work with minimal supervision and be detail oriented. You should have good writing skills.

You must be able to lift boxes of documents weighing up to 22 kg.

Pay Grade: HOURLY

Salary Range: $14.90 - $28.12 Bi-Weekly
