Cape Breton University is seeking applicants interested in joining the Library and Cultural Resources team as a Library Assistant, Circulation. This position will be on a casual basis.As the first point of contact for patrons of all types (students, staff, public) should possess a warm and friendly manner, have excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in an ever-changing environment. The successful candidate will provide public service at the Circulation Desk. Shifts will consist of weekdays, evenings and weekend shifts.The work includes moderate physical ability including bending, reaching, pushing book carts, and lifting.Duties Include:
  • Provide circulation services including registering patrons, checking materials in and out, collecting fines and placing holds, etc;
  • Answer general questions and search for materials;
  • Refer requests to appropriate internal and external sources and offer alternatives if required;
  • Assist patrons with printers/scanners and general computer and photocopier problems.
  • Locate and obtain requested materials and inform patrons;
  • Evaluate questions that should be referred to the Reference Librarian;
  • Use a point-of-sale machine to process financial transactions;
  • Responsible for receiving cash for fines, debit cards, interlibrary loans, etc;
  • Maintain the confidentiality of patron information;
  • Handle patron issues, referring unresolved problems to the Senior Library Technician, Overdues & Circulation;
  • Record patron counts from Student Assistants at appointed times;
  • Check security violations and maintain logs at Circulation Desk;
  • Participate in regular shelf-reading to maintain accuracy of shelved books;
  • Assist students who have encountered difficult situations such as lost and stolen items;
  • Adapt to incremental changes to library technology and knowledge base;
  • Open and close the library, consult with security when needed.
