We are currently seeking a Librarian to operate and maintain the correctional facility's library program as well as provide library services to meet the professional needs of staff and the leisure/therapeutic needs of inmates.

What can I expect to do in this role?

  • Provide a variety of library services including organizing/maintaining the library's collection of books, periodicals and publications
  • Assist users with inquiries, provide information on library stock, services and procedures, as well as deliver books to units
  • Maintain a manual and/or automated circulation system
  • Re-shelf or re-arrange books, prepare purchase orders, take stock, and perform minor book repairs
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new library services
  • Promote and align the library program with the goals of the institution
  • Maintain the safety and security of the library work area
  • Liaise with institutional and professional staff as well as supervise inmates using the Library
  • Supervise and instruct inmates helpers working in the Library

How do I qualify?

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

  • You have demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and providing a variety of library services
  • You have knowledge of library procedures and best practices as well as experience with circulation, referencing, cataloguing, inter-library loaning, serials/publications management, and minor repairs of library materials
  • You are able to understand and comply with organizational policies and procedures in order to maintain the safety and security of the library area
  • You can use automated library information systems
  • You are proficient with computer software applications to maintain and search for data as well as prepare correspondence and reports


Analytical, Research, and Organizational Skills

  • You can perform descriptive cataloguing of library materials as well as search for books and other materials for library users
  • You are able to prepare statistical reports on library activities
  • You can effectively plan and manage your work


Communication and Interpersonal Skills

  • You can maintain working relationships with staff and inmates
  • You are able to clearly provide information to library users on library stock, borrowing process, inter-library loan process/services, and circulation services
  • You have writing skills to prepare correspondence and maintain library stock records
  • You have demonstrated tact and courtesy to respond to user requests, supervise inmate helpers, and handle behavioural issues as they arise
