The Legal Support Advocate is a registered counsellor or social worker with experience in the criminal justice system or community advocacy. Reporting to SVNB's Director of Intervention Services and working collaboratively with the Director of Strategic Development, the Legal Support Advocate supports the Independent Legal Advice + team to provide support and advocacy to clients undertaking or considering legal proceedings relating to sexual victimization. The Legal Support Advocate will also support the broader interventions team by co-facilitating sexual violence support groups and providing short-term sexual violence intervention services. This is a full-time, 1 year term position subject to funding, job performance and meeting minimum qualifications.

Duties/Responsibilities

Utilize best-practice research to inform the development and maintenance of a Legal Support Advocate service model including policies, protocols, materials, resources and formalized agreements between community and justice system partners

Support SVNB's ILA+ team in the evaluation and establishment of best practices for ILA+ programs in New Brunswick

Develop and sustain strong collaborative partnerships with service providers within the Fredericton region criminal justice system and relevant government and community-based partners

Serve as a liaison between agencies and systems such as Fredericton Police Force, RCMP, the courts, victim services, and SVNB

Connect clients with independent legal advice lawyers when needed

Familiarize clients with criminal and civil legal system processes.

Provide accompaniment throughout the justice process where possible and at the discretion of the client

Participate in regular provincial LSA team meetings

Provide consultation to SVNB frontline staff as needed

Participate in ongoing evaluation of program

Co-facilitate the delivery of SVNB's sexual violence support groups

Provide short-term sexual assault intervention services

Coordinate the Fredericton Sexual Assault Response Team

Collaborate on creating other SVNB materials as needed

Adhere to the most current SVNB policies

Perform other related tasks as needed

Case management

Organizational data collection.

Qualifications Related

Licensed/registered counsellor or social worker, in good standing, in the province of New Brunswick

Knowledge and experience in the field of gender-based violence, feminist principles, and a demonstrated commitment to the eradication of gender-based violence

Advanced understanding of the criminal justice system and the path of a sexual assault investigation/trial

Strong, demonstrated capabilities in the areas of care and sensitivity to survivors of violence as well as cultural awareness and understanding;

Previous experience working with survivors of sexual violence and/or vulnerable populations

Experience in the legal field, particularly in areas of trauma-informed practice

Previous experience providing information or support to the public

Very strong interpersonal and organizational skills and an ability to work with others in collaborative team/work group environments.

Demonstrates sound ethics

Commitment to the vision, mission, goals and objectives of SVNB

Excellent networking skills and demonstrated ability to develop collaborative relationships with community members, organizations and levels of government

Excellent judgement, attention to detail, and time management skills

Excellent analytic, research, and problem-solving skills

Self-directed, takes initiative, creative, and adaptable; able to work in a team and independently

Possess a current Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check

Bilingualism in English and French is highly desired; however, candidates meeting all other requirements will also be considered.

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)

Hours of Work

Work week is Monday to Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm. (37.5 hours per week) Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekend work in order to meet program needs.

Renumeration

Annual salary - $59,000 - $66,000 per year plus benefits, depending on demonstrated experience and qualifications.
