Legal Director and General Counsel

The Legal Director and General Counsel function is a key member of Schindler Elevator Corporation's (Canada) business management team and must possess excellent legal and business judgment. The position is responsible for providing legal advice and guidance related to a wide range of corporate, commercial, regulatory and business matters. It further includes the role of Compliance Officer to ensure awareness and enforcement of the Schindler Code of Conduct. This position reports directly to the President of Schindler Elevator Corporation (Canada) while functionally reporting to the Senior Vice President and General Counsel-Americas. The position will be located at Headquarters in Toronto.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice to a wide range of internal stakeholders (area management, branch managers, account managers etc.);
  • Draft, review, and negotiate construction, service, supply and other commercial agreements and documents assuring that both legal and business objectives are met;
  • Manage the contract approval process and work with the field organization to ensure compliance;
  • Manage dispute resolutions, litigations and arbitrations in all areas of the business including construction, and commercial;
  • Provide trainings to the field organization regarding, among other things, contract negotiation techniques and best practices for project management documentation;
  • Manage corporate housekeeping for the Canadian legal entity;
  • Assume the function of a compliance officer for Canada (including trainings on compliance matters for management and employees);
  • Foster a strong working relationship with Corporate Legal Services, in particular the General Counsel Americas;
  • Manage relations to local authorities and government and monitor new legislation and legal trends;

Knowledge
  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school with excellent academic credentials;
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, ideally a combination of a top law firm and as in-house counsel;
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in one or more provinces;
  • Extensive experience in commercial and corporate law, ideally also in construction law;
  • Proven ability to build relationship and influence senior management and other stakeholders;
  • Proven track record in developing strategy and managing complex legal matters;
  • Demonstrated business acumen and ability to make commercially astute decisions and take clear position on complex issues;
  • Strong communication and leadership skills;
Critical Skills

Technical Legal Skills:
  • Demonstrated excellent legal training and experience working in an analytical manner on complex legal matters;
  • Demonstrated roll-up-the-sleeves attitude and ability to work efficiently in a fast paced and high volume environment .
Collaboration and Communication Skills:
  • Takes ownership of his / her cases and projects and works proactively to achieve the set targets;
  • Works with a true team-based, "can do" culture;
  • Has sound interpersonal skills and can build relationship across Canada, North America and the Schindler Group;
  • Has strong communication skills (written and spoken) in English, ideally also has knowledge in French (spoken);
  • Demonstrates the courage to speak his / her mind robustly, yet diplomatically, as and when required.
