Position Overview

Aecon is currently seeking a Site Safety Lead. The Site Safety Lead is a leader of safety excellence, responsible for ensuring compliance of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) plan and assisting in the supervision of the project and by being present in the work areas. This position is for the Giant Gold Mine Project located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer the EHS Program
  • Promote the highest level of safety
  • Provide direction and support for managers, supervisors, sub-contractors regarding their responsibilities for maintaining a positive and inclusive safety culture
  • Ensure all workplace parties fulfill their responsibilities for the EHS program
  • Have good working knowledge of Occupational Health (OHSA) and Safety legislation and Workers\' Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) policies
  • Participate/support \xe2\x80\x9cpre-planning\xe2\x80\x9d stages of work
  • Assist in the management of worker\'s compensation claims
  • Conduct workplace safety audits
  • Walking the project sites with workers\' safety representatives to assess safety and to address deficiencies.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Supports project specific conventional safety and environmental management plans and procedures including; inspections, audits, observation and coaching, Worker Trades Committee and JHSC.
  • Ensures site specific safety orientation to workers, owners and clients.
  • Trains and/or coordinates employees in Aecon\'s Health, Safety and Environmental Manual, fall protection, confined space entry, traffic protection, traffic control person, WHMIS, respiratory protection, emergency response.
  • Coordinates / Conducts training such as WHMIS, First Aid, Fork lift, etc.
  • Tracks and reports safety-related statistics, manages Return to Work, modified duties cases at the field level.
  • Conducts behavioral observation in the workplace.
  • Updates Material Safety Data Sheets as required.
  • Develops workplace plans - such as emergency evacuations (Emergency Response Plan), fire emergency, traffic controls, fall protection, etc.
  • Orders Safety related PPE for the Project using Aecon\'s PPE Catalogue.
  • Manages the distribution of safety material, supplies and equipment for the Project.
  • Assists in the development of FMEA, JHA\'s / JSA\'s, Safe Work Procedures for High Risk Activities, Critical Lifting and Handling.
  • Promotes the Aecon Safety Program and System to potential industry clients.
  • Participates as a management member of Joint Health and Safety Committees.
  • Conducts studies and analyzes incident / accident trends.
  • Inspects project facilities and recommends and follows up on corrective actions.
  • Works with the Claims Administrator to assist with workers compensation claims and associated activities.
  • Develops return to work and modified work programs.
  • Assists in Accident/Incident investigations.
  • Mediates health and safety issues for resolution.
  • Prepares and assists with external safety audits such as (COR).
  • Coordinates environmental issues.
  • Gathers and provides statistical information to Estimating for tender packages.
  • Supports Human Performance program activities.
  • Supports Human Resources with Respect in the Workplace events.
  • Drives an inclusive culture to promote equity, welcome different perspectives, and enable career progression by fostering a sense of belonging.
Required Skills and Knowledge
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety (Bachelor\'s degree, community college or equivalent experience in the H&S field)
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) required or (ie CRSP, OHS)
  • A minimum of 5 years\' experience coordinating and managing Health and Safety for construction projects (with experience related to specific work type)
  • Experience leading and developing a team of EHS professionals
  • Experience steering and driving EHS activities and initiatives
  • Knowledge of Construction projects with a solid understanding of the Occupation Health and Safety Act (\xe2\x80\x9cOHSA\xe2\x80\x9d)
  • Technical knowledge and expertise related to EHS for specific work type(s)
  • Strong knowledge of WCB and return to work program
  • Experience delivering EHS training programs to individuals and groups
  • Ability to effectively communicate with tact and diplomacy
  • Liaise with external parties such as government inspectors, sub-contractors, and general public
  • Ensure subcontractors and employees comply with safety standards
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Resourceful, organized and understands the principles of Health and Safety Management
  • Ability to identify problems or issues and generate solutions, resolve conflicts and make sound decisions
  • Effectively present information one-on-one and in small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization
  • Adaptable and flexible to an ever-changing environment
  • Ability to manage subcontractors
  • A minimum of 2 years working experience in an EHS Advisor role.
  • Completion of NCSO designation or equivalent OHS education.
  • 3 years experience in construction health and safety.
  • Familiar with construction terminology.
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Legislation.
  • Ability to work in a remote location and shift rotations, live in camp accommodation.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to be proactive.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
