Purpose

The Assay Lead Hand is a working supervisor responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a scheduled crew working in the mineral sciences section of the analytical service department. The individual communicates and ensures that departmental goals and directives applicable to the day to-day safe and efficient operation of the analytical laboratory are met. Keeps Assay Team Supervisor informed of ongoing activities, initiatives and issues or concerns. Assumes the role of the Assay Team Supervisor during his/her absence.

Safety, Environment and Sustainability

  • Ensures that all analytical (mineral science) employees are trained and aware of process status and hazards on specific jobs.
  • Ensure that the respective work areas are maintained and are in compliance with company Health and Safety polices and the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Ensure that employees are kept informed of safety and production statistics to encourage participation in potential improvements.
  • Ensures the safe handling and storage of dangerous goods.
  • Participate in the implementation and sustainability of PGM Health & Safety and Environmental systems within the Analytical Laboratory.
  • Ensures and enforces safe work practices/procedures and safe working conditions are maintained throughout the lab.
  • Responds to emergency situations and unusual operating conditions to ensure the safety of personnel and limit potential negative impacts on production and costs.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high standard of housekeeping in all areas within the analytical laboratory.
  • Promotes the usage of the Five Point Safety Cards and other safety programs.
  • Ensures timely follow-up and implementation of corrective measures.
  • Ensures that daily safety huddles and information exchange meetings are held with employees at the start of each shift.
  • Reports any and all safety or environmental incidents, and completes incident reports as required.
  • Participates/conducts monthly safety meetings
Personnel Management
  • Presently the analytical department includes two crews. The leader is responsible for the direct supervision of their crew and for coordinating the planning of a safe and quality flow of samples to meet the analytical production goals.
  • Completes and reviews performance and works in conjunction with Assay Team Supervisor to set objectives and development plans that will contribute to the long term goals of the lab and encourage continuous learning and personal growth of employees.
  • Provides leadership and direction and encourages employees to develop their skills and abilities and gets involved with the personal training.
Production and Quality
  • Ensures the protocols set forth in the Manual for Quality Control and Quality Assurance are adhered to provides timely and accurate assay support required for the mine and mill to plan optimum production and meet PGM business objectives.
  • Coordinates daily planning so that there are minimal work interruptions and ensures the achievement of analytical KPl\'s.
  • Responsible and accountable for achieving production targets and ensuring maximum utilization of equipment.
  • Communicate with geology and mill departments, as required, to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Responsible for coordinating required daily work and establishing priorities to ensure minimal interruptions.
  • Participates in improvement programs, modifications to equipment, procedures, and policies to improve safety, increase productivity and reduce costs.
Leadership
  • Facilitate and support a "one team" culture at PGM.
  • Demand accountability from technicians for their work performance.
  • Provide clear and consistent direction for the crew through actions and words.
  • Work in conjunction with Assay Team Supervisor to create a suitable schedule ensuring proper coverage for day/ night shift to maximize throughput.
  • Is an effective team leader and works towards objectives, selecting suitable candidates to perform specific job.
  • Encourages team to develop their skills and abilities and get involved with the personal training.
  • Insist on maintaining the highest housekeeping standards for the analytical lab.
  • Inform cross-shift of events/issues during his/ her absence and communicate relevant information to Assay Team Supervisor upon his/her return.
  • Keep assay technicians informed of client needs, sample priority and forecast.
  • Manage cost through efficient use of reagents and ensuring suitable inventory is reasonable for continuous operation.
Training & Experience
  • Diploma from a certified technical college in either Chemistry or Metallurgy, a degree in Chemistry or Metallurgy from a recognized university, or a certificate of assaying issued by the government of British Columbia is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years\' experience in Mineral Science testing for precious metals using fire assay and Atomic absorption finish (gravimetric analysis is also a requirement.
  • Any supervisory experience and pertinent or applicable supervisory courses would be beneficial.
  • Familiar with 17025 ISO/IEC requirements for Laboratory accreditation
  • Able to work independently, without supervision.
  • Must be able to diagnose problems in management of databases optimizing up time and data availability to clients.
  • Must have strong communication skills and willingness to work in Team Environment.
  • Coaching skills.
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS
  • Work well in a team atmosphere
Working Conditions

This is a site based role in Timmins, ON

The schedule is 2 x 2 x 3, days only
