The Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf (BRCCED) is a multi-purpose, multi-program facility that functions as a community centre for the Deaf and as a non-profit charitable provider of services for the Deaf. The organization exists to provide care and opportunities in a communication-rich environment that enhances the quality of life of those we serve.
Reporting to the LBS Program Lead, The Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) Instructor provides instruction, using the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum Framework (OALCF), to a group of Deaf adults with the goals of independence, post-secondary education, or employment.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Provide daily instruction to learners based on the Ontario Adult Literacy Curriculum framework
Provide guidance to learners and families, informing the manager of any needed referrals
Maintain professional demeanor and demonstrates dignity and fairness at all times
Maintain learner confidentiality at all times
Provide ongoing evaluation of learner's progress and goals following pre-set timelines
Develop and maintain a positive welcoming classroom atmosphere for all learners
Maintain open communication and engender trust with staff members in Adult Education and the organization
Delivers instruction in the literacy competencies of reading/writing, communication, numbers and digital technology
Competent with office and classroom technical equipment, including computer, smartboard, and iPad; contributes to maintenance and reports breakage promptly
Monitor learner use of equipment to ensure it is used safely and appropriately
Conducts ongoing learners assessments to determine literacy needs and levels of OALCF competencies
Work with learners to set goals and develop individual education path and activities according to the OALCF and LBS guidelines
Designs educational tools to help learners attain goals and milestones
Develop and uses a daily lesson plan that follow the OALCF curriculum
Complete monthly and annual updates on learner progress and forward report to the Manager of the Adult Education Program
Works with the Manager of the Adult Education Program on LBS scheduling
Remains current on industry legislation, guidelines of the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities and organization policy and procedure
Complete Occurrence Reports as required
Participates in field trips, staff meetings and professional development opportunities
QUALIFICATIONS
French language/LSQ an asset
Diploma/Certificate in Adult Education or a related post-secondary diploma from an accredited institution
Minimum of 3 years of experience teaching OALCF curriculum
Fluency in American Sign Language
Extensive knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf community
Solid English and computer skills, adept with technology and able to provide support to learners
Excelled knowledge of literacy and various cultural backgrounds
Excellent multitasking skills and ability to prioritize while working with competing deadlines
Ability to utilize diplomacy, maintain confidentiality and good judgement
