Job Description

The Splatsin are the most southern tribe of the Secwepemc Nation, the largest Interior Salish speaking First Nation in Canada, whose aboriginal territory stretches from the BC/Alberta border near the Yellowhead Pass to the plateau west of the Fraser River, southeast to the Arrow Lakes and to the upper reaches of the Columbia River.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Lands Clerk is responsible for providing client service for inquiries and assistance into estates for band members that involve land. Working on estate files that are ongoing, up to their completion. Maintaining the filing system, including the Excel spreadsheet for Splatsin reserve land.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Splatsin policies, standards, and procedures and as directed by the Supervisor.
• Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Lands Department and Splatsin.
• Searches computerized systems and responds verbally and in writing to requests for any estates records, such as parcel abstract reports.
• Updates band files of any address changes of the clients.
• Research, reviews, and prepares documents to be sent for registration.
• Inputs data and distributes to the appropriate department and external agency.
• Follows up distributing registered documents to the appropriate parties and prepares them for filing.
• Updates lands data, including all registered documents into the Excel spreadsheet and the Indian Land Holding filing system.
• Provides authorized reports and lists to designated staff, outside agencies and departments, as appropriate.
• Assists in assembling and distributing promotion and public relations information to interested parties.
• Maintains and updates the current business data files.
• Receives and responds to counter, telephone, and fax inquiries.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

• One of the following:

o A paralegal certificate or diploma.

o A degree, certificate, or diploma in a legal or Indigenous field of studies.

o A secondary school diploma with sufficient experience working in similar Indigenous land registry position.

• Knowledge of the Indian Land Registry System (ILRS)
• Experience in Clerical experience role.
• Competent in using the Microsoft suite of programs.
• Experience using Google Earth and overlays.
• Experience using the Canada Land Survey System (CLSS)
• Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
• Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills.
• Ability to organize their work and meet deadlines.
• Ability to verify, research, and collect data; and to prepare reports and other documents.
• Accuracy and neatness in work.
• Keyboarding speed of at least 40 words per minute.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
