The

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

invites applications for a

Laboratory Technician

. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 4 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.


Our research team at the University of Calgary's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine performs research in collaboration with a partner north of Fort MacMurray.


Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):

Assist in finalizing a research project using bacterial cultures of mycobacterium avium spp paratuberculosis, and studies its survival in fecal samples as mimicked in the laboratory Compiling all individual data points Describe and analyze the findings Compile into a report Uses good laboratory practices at our research lab at the foothills campus Uses existing protocols for the use of equipment Critical appraisal and trouble shooting skills for the research question presented Good skills of independent working and development of research questions and the analytic approaches to present the data

Qualifications / Requirements:



Thorough understanding of basic microbiology skills in the lab Additional expertise with mRNA extraction and trouble shooting new approaches to bacterial survival evaluation Skills in gDNA synthesis, qPCR, to study bacterial survival in environmental/fecal samples Finally, good skills in independently deliver a solid draft of a report that can be submitted for peer-review
