Who we are looking for:
This role supports the work of the meal program within a basic needs Drop-In serving homeless and underhoused individuals in Scarborough. The Kitchen Assistant will support the Drop-In Cook with a variety of tasks including managing food items for storage and preparation, unloading trucks, safe storing of food, and kitchen and site cleaning.

About the role:
Support Drop-In Cook with daily food planning, preparation and clean-up
Experience supporting food preparation for large groups of people
Support unloading delivery trucks and storing food deliveries
Ability to follow instructions, and carry out tasks quickly and competently
Knowledge of safe food storage guidelines required
Support maintenance of kitchen facilities and equipment; adhere to proper sanitation and waste disposal procedures
Ability to engage respectfully with participants and follow organizational policies regarding confidentiality, inclusiveness and professionalism
Understanding and sensitivity to issues faced by people who are homeless
Ability to foster a safe, caring, and supportive community environment which values the diversity of people who access the Centre
Participate in meetings as required
Other duties as assigned
About you:
Must have valid Safe Food Handlers Certificate
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Good problem solving and organizational skills
Front-line experience in a community-based agency an asset
Must be able to stand for long periods of time and be able to lift up to 50lbs
Ability to foster a positive and supportive kitchen environment
Sensitive to, and able to work within an anti-racist, anti-oppressive work environment
. Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Strong communication skills
Valid Police Records Check
Working Conditions:
This position involves considerable standing, walking, and lifting within a commercial kitchen environment.
