The Opportunity:

WSP has an opportunity for a Junior / Intermediate Biological Technician to join our Ecology and Environmental Impact Assessment team, located in either our Castlegar or Fort St. John, BC office. Reporting to the Ecology / EIA Interior and Yukon Team Lead, you will participate in multidisciplinary projects in a variety of sectors with a wide range of complexity.

A day in the life:
  • Implementing project/study work plans with a focus on aquatic habitats and fish and fish habitat assessments;
  • Supporting various environmental baseline surveys and/or assessments (water quality, habitat, and aquatic resources);
  • Performing background research and analysis for Project Managers;
  • Executing site-specific field data collection for the Ecology / EIA group across various regions of BC;
  • Entering, verifying, and analyzing data to support senior biologists;
  • Preparing or supporting the development of technical reports, permitting applications, environmental impact assessments, and other associated documents;
  • Promoting health and safety in the workplace;
  • Delivering high quality data on time and within budget, drawing upon technical and scientific knowledge, training, and experience;
  • Working within a team environment and communicating effectively with all levels of staff; and
  • Involvement in field studies and frequent travel away from your home location will be required.
What you\'ll bring to WSP ...
  • A minimum of a technical diploma from an accredited post-secondary program, specializing in Environmental Sciences, Biology, Ecology or other relevant natural sciences;
  • Specialization in either aquatics or fisheries;
  • Experience in field assessments and data collection requirements for ecological sciences;
  • Experience with construction activities and liaising with contractors;
  • Registered with or eligible for registration with the BC College of Applied Biology as a RBTech;
  • Excellent communication and written skills with a demonstrated ability to collect detailed field data;
  • Ability to function in a team environment with representatives from a wide array of disciplines;
  • Proficient with the MS Office Suite;
  • Valid Drivers License;
  • Electrofishing certification is an asset;
  • Boat operator experience is an asset;
  • Familiarity with fish species common to the Columbia and Peace River watersheds is an asset;
  • The willingness to work extensively in the field, occasionally in remote locations and away from your home location for long durations (i.e., several weeks at a time); and
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment and under deadlines.
