Description

The Junior Buyer assists in the purchasing and managing of store inventory to achieve service level and store inventory goals and objectives in assigned categories/commodities. They are responsible for assuming the primary duties of the buyer while he/she is away from the department area.

  • Placing orders, reviewing reports to identify issues on late deliveries, manufacturer outs, and taking appropriate action to maintain high service levels
  • Assist in pricing accuracy for frontline and promotional prices, insuring price integrity while achieving gross profit objectives
  • Aid in the development of strategic plans for categories, including category positioning, in-store promotions, plan-o-guides, pricing, service and inventory levels
  • Assist in regular reviews with stores with selected categories using various inputs, including consumer insights
  • Review with Buyer the implementation of Grocery initiatives including merchandising strategies, promotions, events, advertising, flyers
  • Aid in defining product assortment, negotiating terms and conditions of purchase orders.
  • Assist in monitoring competitive and industry activities (including trends, opportunities etc.) regarding merchandising, marketing, assortment, pricing and promotions and use findings to support continuous improvement and innovation in the category.
  • Identify consumer requirements and develop merchandising plans to meet those requirements.
Requirements

The junior buyer needs to be an organized, detail-oriented individual who has working knowledge in one or more department areas. The following outlines those skills and abilities that would commonly be in the department manager job listings:
  • Data Entry - Junior buyer should be able to enter accurate data for inventory logs, and other records
  • Computer Skills - Intermediate to advanced knowledge with inventory software, tracking systems, and Microsoft Office applications are typically required for junior buyer
  • Communication - Oral and written communication skills are crucial when it comes to speaking to departmental teams, including managers/supervisors/vendors/supplies.
  • Customer Service - Buying team is committed to providing superior customer satisfaction to both internal and external customers.
  • Work Independently - Buying team will work to obtain the ability to make quick decisions in fast-paced environments without having to consult senior buyer all the time.
  • Organizational Skills - Assist in keeping an orderly work area allows for accuracy in ordering and maintaining supplies
  • Physicality - The ability to stand and walk for long periods of time and bend, stoop, and lift are physical attributes that are important for junior buyer.
  • Change Management Skills - The ability to adapt, be flexible and be able to work under pressure. He/she should be able to complete departmental tasks/responsibilities within a given timeframe.
