About the position




We are looking for a detail-oriented Junior Accountant with a solid foundation in accounting principles to join our team. Reporting to the Finance Manager, this role will contribute to key portfolios, conduct financial analyses and reconciliations, and take ownership of assigned working papers. The Junior Accountant will also support planning, forecasting, and budgeting processes that inform strategic business decisions and promote the financial health of YMCA BC.



This position collaborates closely with other Accounting staff and Finance Managers and plays a vital role in executing a full range of accounting functions, including month-end and year-end procedures.

The YMCA BC is a CPA Pre-approved Program Route (PPR) office.



Major Responsibilities

Review, edit, post, and reconcile month-end entries from subsystems such as PerfectMind and ActiveNet, including sub-ledger and accrual entries to the general ledger Prepare and review regular reconciliations for deferred revenue, grants, major gifts, capital assets, and other statement of financial position accounts Perform month-end closings for assigned portfolios and departments Prepare financial reports and conduct variance analyses for various levels of management Analyze operational financial statements to identify variances and support management reporting Assist in the preparation of year-end audit working papers Collaborate with branch administrative staff to improve procedures and resolve accounting issues Apply professional judgment and experience to effectively plan and achieve goals Oversee processes and monitor compliance, identifying opportunities for improvement and increased efficiency Support general accounting functions to maintain smooth departmental workflow

Qualification

Completion of a diploma or degree in Accounting or a related field Actively pursuing a professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) is considered an asset Minimum of six months of experience in an accounting environment; experience in the not-for-profit sector is an asset Familiarity with Sage Intacct or other cloud-based accounting systems is an asset Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with advanced skills required Strong verbal and written communication abilities Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team Proven track record of meeting deadlines consistently Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
