The Role
The Junior Accountant plays a key role in supporting the Assistant Controller with the day-to-day accounting functions to ensure accurate financial reporting and efficient month-end processes. This position is responsible for maintaining the integrity of accounts payable, accounts receivable, prepaid expenses, and capital asset records, as well as preparing reconciliations and supporting schedules for review.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and eager to develop their accounting skills in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across multiple areas of accounting while contributing to the accuracy and reliability of the company's financial information.
Key Responsibilities
Accounts Payable
Process and accurately code vendor and subcontractor invoices to appropriate cost codes and general ledger accounts.
Verify that all invoices have proper approvals, supporting documentation, and comply with company policies and contract terms.
Prepare payments (cheques, EFTs, and wire transfers) for Assistant Controller review and approval.
Maintain and reconcile the accounts payable subledger and vendor statements to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Accounts Receivable
Prepare and issue customer invoices accurately and on schedule.
Apply customer deposits to AR accounts and ensure accurate matching to invoices.
Maintain the AR subledger and assist with responding to customer inquiries and payment-related questions.
General Accounting and Reconciliations
Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations, ensuring all transactions are properly coded and supported.
Reconcile prepaid expenses and maintain detailed monthly amortization schedules.
Track, record, and reconcile capital asset additions, disposals, and depreciation.
Prepare reconciliations and supporting schedules (AR, AP, bank, credit cards, capital assets, and prepaids) for Assistant Controller review and approval.
Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities, including preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and working papers.
Prepare audit and management reporting schedules as required.
Collaboration and Support
Work closely with other departments to ensure cost coding accuracy and consistent financial data.
Support process improvements to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls within the accounting function.
Provide ad-hoc financial and administrative assistance to the Assistant Controller as required.
Qualifications & Experience
Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
Strong understanding of fundamental accounting principles and practices.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software such as QuickBooks and Zoho Books.
Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
Positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and take initiative.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks while meeting tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Working toward, or interested in pursuing, a CPA designation is considered an asset.
