About Us:
Tonari Gumi is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the Japanese Canadian community. We offer cultural, social, and educational programs that promote Japanese heritage and foster community engagement.
Position Summary:
We are launching a new Japanese Tea Ceremony & Culture Program in Steveston this fall. We are seeking a passionate and experienced Tea Ceremony (Sado) Instructor to lead monthly cultural sessions and share the traditional Japanese Way of Tea with community members.
Responsibilities:
Lead one Japanese Tea Ceremony session per month (total of 4 sessions)
Introduce the philosophy, etiquette, and cultural background of Sado
Provide a welcoming and inclusive learning experience for participants
Coordinate with Tonari Gumi staff for scheduling, setup, and materials
Offer light cultural interpretation if needed (in English; Japanese optional)
Qualifications:
Experience in performing or teaching the Japanese Tea Ceremony (e.g., Urasenke, Omotesenke, etc.)
Strong communication and public speaking skills
Ability to travel to Steveston, Richmond once a month
Japanese language skills are an asset, but not required
Friendly, patient, and culturally respectful
Compensation:
Honorarium will be provided per session.
Contract Duration:
September to December 2025 (4 sessions total)
