Description:
SmartICE is the community sea ice monitoring service for Iqaluit. SmartICE is partnering with the community on a new project to document and share important Inuit sea ice knowledge to support safer sea ice travel around Iqaluit. Similar work was done in Mittimatalik by Andrew Arreak, see example products here.
We are looking for Inuit interested in learning more about their community's ice knowledge from Elders and experienced hunters, and who will be trained to:
hold workshops and meetings;
learn more about using computers and mapping with computers;
make posters, books, and maps for their community to share this knowledge; and
learn how to monitor sea ice conditions using satellite data.
Trainers will come to Iqaluit on September 15th to 20th to work with you one-on-one. After, training will take place in an on-line classroom with 10 other Inuit from across Inuit Nunangat. Travel will be required to attend two annual training workshops in Nunavut in January and March each year.
Qualifications:
No sea ice experience is necessary, just an interest to learn from your community.
Basic knowledge of how to use a computer and mobile phone.
