The Nova Scotia Legislature is the legislative branch of the Government of Nova Scotia. It is made up of democratically elected representatives (the MLAs) who form the House of Assembly, and the Lieutenant Governor. The Legislature makes laws, controls provincial public spending, and monitors and questions the executive branch\'s policies and actions.

The Legislative Library provides its legislative clients with confidential, reliable, and non-partisan information services supported by a unique collection and expert knowledge. We preserve history as it happens by collecting Nova Scotian legislative and government publications and published works about Nova Scotia and making it accessible on the Nova Scotia Legislature\'s web site.

About Our Opportunity

We\'re looking for an Internet Applications Specialist who will maintain and direct the Nova Scotia Legislature web site and support the Legislative Library and other House of Assembly divisions by creating and maintaining database and internet applications that assist in their work.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Formulate and realize the Internet and intranet strategies for the Nova Scotia Legislature.
  • Lead and facilitate the effective planning, analysis, design, implementation, deployment, and delivery of the Nova Scotia Legislature\'s web environment, which includes custom built public and internal web-based products and platforms.
  • Ensure that new and updated platforms and products are thoroughly tested for performance, are able to handle specified load, and can be maintained over the long-term.
  • Database development
  • Train and advise legislature staff on effective use of information technology
  • Work with cybersecurity to ensure security-by-design and identify additional security risks and mitigation plans.
  • Work with teams across the legislature to understand user needs and translate those into technical solutions for new and existing web platforms.
  • Work with colleagues and supplier team members to write specifications, tests, code and documentation for new and existing systems.
  • Assist with building a culture of continuous delivery and improvement, ensuring that key systems are regularly analyzed, maintained and improved.
Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you will have a related Bachelor\'s Degree in a related field of study such as Computer Science with 1 year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.

As the ideal candidate you have:
  • A track record of hands-on delivery using Drupal, SharePoint, and database technologies.
  • Recent experience with web languages including HTML5, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript. Other programming languages will be considered an asset.
  • Experience with databases such as MySQL.
  • Knowledge of version control with git.
  • The ability to write comprehensive technical documentation and step-by-step developer guides
  • Experience performing code reviews to ensure code quality and maintainability.
Also, you are interested in the democratic process and want to help the legislature find innovative methods to help provide public access to legislative documents and proceedings.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

When the House of Assembly is sitting, this position may be required to be on call for emergency support in the evenings, on weekends and during holidays.

Pay Grade: PR 06 - PR 10

Salary Range: $1,859.58 - $2,666.69 Bi-Weekly
