Job Summary:
Reporting to a Production Editor, the Production Editorial Intern will be a key member of the team responsible for preparing books for publication during the final stages of development. In their role, the Production Editorial Intern will assist the department in its daily operations by reviewing typeset pages, printers\xe2\x80\x99 proofs, and ePub files to ensure that quality standards are met. They will also review book jackets and covers through various passes, collate proofreader and author changes to interior text files, check the inputting of corrections, apply layout standards, and complete cold reads when required.

The Production Editorial Intern will work on a wide range of books, including adult fiction and non-fiction across various genres (including some illustrated books), as well as children\xe2\x80\x99s and young adult titles. Working as part of a collaborative and dedicated team, the Production Editorial Intern will be immersed in the day-to-day functioning of a busy department, working alongside colleagues in the Editorial and Art departments. They will also have the opportunity for one-on-one meetings with employees across the organization.

This internship is 100% remote, with the Production Editorial Intern observing our core business
hours of Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time). Access to reliable internet
during these hours is required.

Responsibilities

  • Review the interior and cover components of multiple books for typographical correctness and stylistic consistency through various passes
  • Collate author changes and proofreading corrections, ensuring that revisions are incorporated accurately and queries are resolved
  • Mark up PDFs (using Adobe Acrobat commenting tools) with editorial and layout corrections
  • Conduct production checks on typeset pages (checking line breaks, text flow, folios, headers and footers, stacking, widows and orphans, formatting, prelims and endmatter, etc.)
  • Proofread and fact-check cover copy
  • Copyedit/proofread ancillary documents, such as praise pages, marketing materials, reading group guides, etc.
  • Conduct QA checks on ePub files and review soft proof files from printers
  • Assist with bound galley production and reprint corrections as needed
  • Register books for CIP data with Library and Archives Canada
  • Assist with administrative duties and keep status grids up to date
  • Attend Managing Editorial and Production meetings, along with other departmental and company meetings as required
Qualifications

Specific training or job experience required includes the following:
  • Completion of university or college education, or the possession of equivalent relevant work experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word\xe2\x80\x99s track changes; working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat and Excel
  • Strong written communication skills, an eye for detail, and a diplomatic manner
  • Applicants must be eligible to work and be paid in Canada
  • Publishing Program Certificate not required; however, experience copyediting and proofreading, either through a formal program or other avenues, will be a strong asset
