Major Duties


Works with the customer and ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. design team and project manager to design the system solutions, including hardware and software that meet the customer's process requirements.

Skills


A working knowledge of common machine shop techniques.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of drafting principles.
  • Must be capable in AutoCAD and Solid Works.
  • Must be capable of designing tooling from sketches or verbal concepts.
  • Must be capable of working as part of a team.
  • A thorough knowledge of the use of pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • A thorough knowledge of the use of electrical devices (i.e. switches, load cells, LVDT’s, etc.).
  • Must be capable of giving and taking direction.

Specific Responsibilities




Primary responsibilities:
  • Develops design concepts and labour hours budget in quote preparation
  • Accountable for the engineering of the system, including analysis and design of all aspects of a machine, such as but not limited to, System Accuracy, Cycletime, Vibration etc.
  • Prepare engineering calculations and analysis with respect to strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs according to applicable codes and standards.
  • Responsible for learning a customer process and becoming the local expert in it, to support the design and eventually the integration of the machine once it is built.
  • Responsible for systems design and development planning, execution and monitoring including:
  • Design Plan Preparation
  • Defining responsibilities for implementation
  • Reviewing and updating the plans as design and development evolves
  • Ensures that design requirements are appropriate, documented, reviewed and approved
  • Evaluates design output for conformance to design input requirements
  • Plans and conducts design reviews at appropriate stages of design development
  • Responsible for documenting the results of design reviews
  • Conducts design verifications to confirm that design output meets the design input requirement
  • Responsible for performing design validation under defined operating conditions
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness etc. in the development of equipment, processes and products.
  • Produce working drawings, detail drawings and bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product, using AutoCAD and Solid Works.
  • Provide design support related to construction of CSA B51 and CSA N285.0 pressure boundary components within the ATS Certificate of Authorization as required.
  • Strictly follow CSA N285/NQA Quality requirements as defined within the manual and procedures
  • Assists in the supervision of others within the department.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Organize documentation, including quotes, correspondence, requisitions, drawings, schedules, etc. on projects you are supervising.
  • Responsible for communicating time estimates and resource requirements on design tasks to the Manager, Nuclear Engineering and the Project Manager
  • Accountable for the development of engineering specifications
  • Leads or participates in design reviews with customers, vendors and internal design groups
  • Coordinates project activities with suppliers of process critical third party equipment
  • Conducts acceptance tests and approving process critical third party equipment
  • Models and conducts experiments on high risk system elements to validate design assumptions
  • Participates in the integration of some or all of the tasks for which you have design responsibilities.
  • Reviews machine performance from internal factory acceptance tests
  • Willing to work as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW), and work in radioactive environments including nuclear site work.

Qualifications



Education:
  • A post secondary degree in Systems Design, Engineering Physics, Engineering Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering or equivalent.
  • A Licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario.

Experience:
  • Five years of experience in engineering design, development and qualification of custom machinery, systems or equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of robotics, machine controls, structured problem solving, DOE, statistical analysis, precision engineering principles is necessary.
  • Good written and oral communication skills and ability to lead or work as part of a multi-disciplinary project team are essential.
  • Three years of experience in nuclear tooling and equipment development and testing.
  • Field support and experience is required.
  • Thorough understanding of machine design and build, and structured problem solving is necessary.
