Job Description


Scope of Position:

Initial shifts scheduled will be Instructor Guard shifts. Once the required one-year experience and SIG training has been completed, the successful candidate(s) can be scheduled for Supervising Instructor Guard shifts as required for relief.

Position Description:

Duties required for both the Instructor Guard & Supervising Instructor Guard roles:

  • To safeguard life and prevent accidents at the County swimming pools and to teach swimming programs and promote good relations with patrons of the facilities.
  • Responsible for safety supervision, class management, and risk management at the swimming classes.
  • Work according to Health and Safety Act, Lifesaving Society Standards, and Norfolk County Policies.
  • Provide instruction to individuals and groups in organized swimming classes
  • Prepare lesson plans, organize equipment, teach and evaluate swim classes in accordance with the standards established by the Lifesaving Society and Norfolk County. Classes include but not limited to aquafitness and mobility classes.
  • Complete all documentation related to class instruction such as but not limited to attendance, completing report cards, and inputting participant results into recreation software system.
  • Perform lifeguard duties during recreational swims, rental groups, and other aquatics programs. Ensure compliance with Regulation 565 and Norfolk County policies and procedures including performing rescues and first aid when required.
  • Ability to use critical thinking and react in an emergency situation which may involve first aid or a building emergency.
  • Assist with special pool programs and special County aquatic events/water safety initiatives that are held at the pool or at other locations
  • Attend and participate in aquatic division meetings and in-house training sessions that are organized by the Supervisor, Aquatics
  • Participate in team building with all staff.
  • Complete any necessary reports and documentation associated with pool operation to include but not limited to: shift reports in the pool logbook, incident reports, pool fouling reports, water readings, etc.
  • Accept and process payments for swim programs, pass cards, and general admissions
  • Handle customer service inquiries professionally
  • Help to maintain the pool facility by performing regulated water tests, equipment checks, cleaning and sanitization duties in accordance to Ministry of Health and Norfolk County policies. Report all problems to Supervisor, Aquatics
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatics
Duties for the Supervising Instructor Guard role:
  • Provide supervision and direction to staff when in the role of Supervising Instructor Guard
Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

Knowledge and Experience required for both the Instructor Guard and Supervising Instructor Guard roles:
  • Must be currently enrolled in a secondary education institution or institution of high learning on a full-time basis and be returning to school full-time at the next available term.
  • Current Life Saving Society Swim Instructor status.
  • Current National Lifeguard Award
  • Current Standard First Aid, C.P.R., A.E.D.
  • Aquafitness Certification through CALA or Water ART or willing to obtain certification
  • High 5 \xe2\x80\x93 Principles of Healthy Child Development (an asset)
Knowledge and Experience required for the Supervising Instructor Guard role:
  • Current Lifesaving Society Instructor Status
  • One year experience as an Instructor Guard to become familiar with scope of position, or equivalent previous experience, plus in-house SIG specific training

  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment and have the basic understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Benefits

The Community Development department is looking to fill up to eight (up to 8) vacancies into one of the positions outlined below determined by candidate qualifications:

Position:

Instructor Guard (Student)

OR Instructor Guard/Supervising Instructor Guard (Student)

Status: Temporary Part Time (see information below) (up to 24 hours per week)

This student position will continue until such Employee reaches the completion of school and therefore no longer defined as a student, unless terminated prior to that time.

Employee Group: Non-Union

Wage:

Instructor Guard - $23.75 per hour

Supervising Instructor Guard - $26.10 per hour

Note: If hired as an Instructor Guard initially, the successful candidate can transition to an Instructor Guard/Supervising Instructor Guard (IG/SIG) after one-year IG experience and specific SIG training requirements have been met.

Location: Annaleise Carr Aquatics Centre. From approximately June \xe2\x80\x93 September annually, you may also be scheduled for shifts at the Delhi Kinsmen Pool.
