The Geography Department is excited to contribute courses for two new degrees within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences starting in the Fall of 2025: the Bachelor of Environment and Society (Environmental Sciences) and the Bachelor of Environment and Society (Environmental Studies). These degrees will be housed within the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies. Courses for these degree programs will be taught at Capilano University's North Vancouver and Squamish campuses.




About the role


The Geography Department at Capilano University invites applications for a non-regular instructor in human geography. This is a unionized position and the successful candidate is required to teach two sections of GEOG 100 Human Geography and one section of GEOG 201 Urban Studies during the Spring 2026 term. Courses have a maximum of 35 students and will be delivered at our main North Vancouver campus. The successful candidate may be offered additional sections in future terms (fall, spring or summer) at the North Vancouver or Squamish campus dependent on scheduling needs and course enrolments. The position will begin on 1 January 2026.

The instructor will initially teach core human and urban geography courses at the undergraduate level and may be asked to teach or develop other courses in urban sustainability or regional geography relevant to their area of expertise. Duties include:

Teach subjects and skills related to your area of expertise. Prepare and deliver courses, including lectures, seminars, labs and field trips. Evaluate student learning through assessments and marking. Provide support to students through weekly office hours and advising. Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain expertise and stay current with advancements and best practices in relevant fields of study.





Candidates are also expected to support school/ department initiatives and provide service to departmental, faculty and university-wide committees. These duties include:

Creating and updating course materials, outlines and curriculum. Participating in meetings, committees, and events at the program, department, faculty, and university levels.

Experience, competencies & qualifications


Preference will be given to candidates with (or very near completion of) a PhD in Geography or a closely related discipline. Candidates with a Master's degree in these areas or a closely related discipline and demonstrated excellence in teaching will be considered. The successful candidate will bring expertise, innovation, creativity and leadership in the required areas of teaching. They should be experienced with a range of teaching practices relevant to this post, which may include studio-learning, region-integrated experiential learning, and work-integrated learning (WIL) with community partners. We recognize that candidates may bring additional experience and qualifications other than those listed here; we encourage applicants to include any other relevant experiences, skills or perspectives that align with the role within your application.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, as outlined in the teaching statement, and for shortlisted candidates by an outstanding performance during their teaching demonstration.
