BCIT\xe2\x80\x99s Learning Teaching Centre is currently seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE ) Instructional Materials Developer. As part of a project team, the Instructional Materials Developer (IMD) plays a key role in delivering quality education at BCIT by designing and developing course materials and program proposals which requires proficiency as a technical writer, editor, and researcher, to develop instructional materials for the certificate, diploma, degree, and advanced degree levels. The IMD writes materials for the classroom and develops innovative instructional materials for distance and online learners and develops print and web-based resources that directly enhance teaching and learning at the Institute.


Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :

Planning and Design:
  • Decide the most effective medium for presenting content by applying knowledge and expertise in technical communication and learning theory, and by evaluating audience, purpose, and occasion
  • Design the framework for content in all media, based on knowledge of usability, accessibility, and learning theory
  • Develop style guides and templates
  • Develop information architecture for Institute-wide web content in collaboration with Institute partners
  • Identify information sources for needs assessments and analyze information to support program development
  • Consult with clients to design effective surveys
  • Help facilitate focus groups



Writing and Research:
  • IMDs write print and web-based learning materials, manuals, instructor guides, proposals, user guides, help files, reference materials, policies, reports, promotional materials, newsletters, video scripts, questionnaires, and content for BCIT public website pages and other Institute-wide initiatives. IMDs must
  • Collaborate with instructional development consultants (IDCs), subject matter experts (SMEs), and clients to develop content and ensure its accuracy
  • Acquire and apply background or basic knowledge of content areas or disciplines
  • Interpret specialized (e.g., technical, scientific, medical) information
  • Use the Internet to obtain technical information (written and graphic) from manufacturers, academic publications, and other sources for use in writing projects
  • Use the library, phone, email, and personal interviews to conduct research
  • Synthesize content from a variety of information sources
  • Communicate specialized information (e.g., technical, scientific, medical) in concise, clear language suited to the audience, purpose, occasion, and intended output (e.g., print, web), for classroom, distributed, or distance delivery, to meet identified learning outcomes
  • Structure print and online documents to ensure optimum usability
  • Collaborate with multimedia developers, video producers, and IDCs to create storyboards for interactive multimedia elements
  • Identify the need for illustrations and multimedia elements and coordinate their production
  • Prepare content for the Internet using html and/or xml coding, web authoring software (e.g., Dreamweaver, Edit Plus, EZSurvey and Marqui), and/or pdf conversion software (Adobe Acrobat)


Editing and Quality Assurance:
  • Perform substantive edits of the instructional materials, proposals, and learning resources developed at BCIT. This involves organizing the content in a logical and coherent manner, identifying and eliminating structural inconsistencies, and suggesting or creating new ways to present material for better comprehension and usability.
  • Copy-edit the complete range of materials and documentation developed at BCIT
  • Ensure the overall accuracy and quality of final print and electronic documents, including text, illustrations, and layout
  • Ensure styles and standards have been applied consistently and accurately across multiple documents produced for a single project
  • Write coherent and diplomatic editorial notes or speak directly with authors concerning changes, edits, clarifications, and negotiate such changes
  • Identify possible legal issues (e.g., libel, plagiarism, missing copyright permissions, failure to give sources) and departures from social acceptability (e.g., sexism, racism, or other biases)
  • Develop standards for editorial processes
  • Communicate standards and best practices to project teams
  • Assess level of editing and rewriting required


Project Management and Administration:
  • Collaborate with IDCs to develop effort estimates and timelines to complete projects
  • Ensure that deliverables from graphic artists, multimedia developers, subject matter experts, and other personnel are supplied according to project and production schedules
  • Schedule interviews and work sessions with SMEs and coordinate SME technical reviews
  • Establish and maintain day-to-day working relationships with clients and project teams
  • Work independently to undertake projects, fulfill project requirements, meet deadlines, and prioritize workload
  • Exercise initiative in identifying and solving problems
  • Meet with clients, project teams, committees, SMEs and others
  • Provide form coding, results summaries, and data warehousing services for online surveys
  • Maintain server files for online surveys and web sites and liaise with the Computer Resources Department to troubleshoot problems
  • Establish and maintain project filing and directory systems
  • Manage version control of documents
  • Identify where copyright clearance is required and contact copyright holders to obtain permissions.
  • Maintain copyright tracking records.
  • Mentor new Instructional Materials Developers
  • Assist in organizing Institute-wide events (e.g., PD Day)
  • Represent the LTC on Institute-wide project teams and committees (e.g., Copyright Permission Tracking Database Design Committee, Records Management System Steering Committee, and BCIT Web Development Committee)


Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.


Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS :

Definition:
The qualifications section for this position was developed using the approved job evaluation plan, agreed to between the BCGEU and BCIT. The qualifications represent the minimum qualifications required in the future (i.e. to be reflected in job postings) and do not reflect the incumbent\xe2\x80\x99s existing qualifications.

Education:
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree plus completion of post-secondary courses in technical communication, publishing, education, and/or marketing.
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree or advanced diploma in education or curriculum development would be a definite asset.



Experience:
  • Two years general writing experience plus up to four years experience in a similar position designing and developing instructional materials, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Experience in a project management or lead writer role, preferably on an instructional materials development project.
  • Experience writing for print and online publications. Advanced word processing and page layout skills.
  • Experience in web page design and creation. Ability to apply knowledge of educational theory.


Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:
  • Demonstrated ability with MS Office Suite, web authoring software (e.g., Dreamweaver), use and application of HTML and/or XML, Adobe Acrobat, web browsers, FTP programs, common operating systems, and standard graphics and publishing file formats (e.g., gif, tiff, pdf, eps).
  • Ability to manage files and documents over an extended network and establish and maintain relative links, paths, and hierarchies.
  • Ability to learn new software quickly and independently to a high degree of proficiency.
  • Familiarity with software such as SPSS, EZSurvey, Robohelp, Flash, FrameMaker, screen capture software, and scanning software would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with content management systems (e.g., Marqui) and learning management systems (e.g., WebCT) would also be an asset.


Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and diplomacy. Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.


Administrative Skills
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work on work on complex projects simultaneously and manage and prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed.
  • Maintains currency through ongoing professional development.

Salary Range
Salary Grade 10: $61,268 - $66,481 per annum.


Additional Salary Information
External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
