The Law Society of British Columbia is seeking an Indigenous Summer Law Student to assist assigned departments with special projects. The Law Society of British Columbia regulates the legal profession in BC, protecting the public interest in the administration of justice by setting and enforcing standards of professional conduct for lawyers. We ensure the public is well served by legal professionals who are honourable and competent. We also bring a voice to issues affecting the justice system and the delivery of legal services. We are committed to promoting truth and reconciliation in the legal profession. This position is open to persons of Indigenous ancestry. Candidates for the position will be required to provide proof of Indigenous ancestry.[1] The duties of the Indigenous Summer Law Student include: Depending on the assigned department and project, responsibilities will include some or all of the following:

  • Conducting legal, policy and general research and preparing legal memoranda.
  • Attending hearings and committee meetings and assisting with the preparation of materials for the meetings.
  • Assisting with general administration matters and tasks.
  • Organizing legal materials.
  • Participating in special Law Society projects.
  • Assisting with the enhancement of existing processes and tools.
Qualifications We are seeking a highly motivated law student who has completed 2nd or 3rd year law and demonstrates:
  • Strong academic achievement.
  • Well-developed analytical skills both quantitative and qualitative.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills as well as attention to detail.
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Multi-tasking skills with the ability to prioritize workload.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office including: MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and Quick law.
Salary The position is for 3.5 months, commencing on May 15, 2023 at $25.00/hr and has a 35 hour work week. [1] Proof of Canadian Indigenous ancestry includes, specifically, a photocopy of either a status, citizenship, membership, registration, or enrolment card issued by: The Registrar of the Federal Government\xe2\x80\x99s \xe2\x80\x9cIndian\xe2\x80\x9d Register; A Band within the meaning of the Indian Act that has control of its membership list; An Indigenous group under a modern land claims agreement; An Inuit organization that is recognized by the Government of Canada; An Inuit organization that is recognized by the Government of Nunavut; One of the M\xc3\xa9tis Settlements in Alberta; A provincial organization that is a member of the M\xc3\xa9tis National Council, which includes the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of British Columbia, the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Alberta, the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Saskatchewan, the Manitoba M\xc3\xa9tis Federation, and the M\xc3\xa9tis Nation of Ontario; or A M\xc3\xa9tis organization that is recognized by the Government of Canada. In the event that the student does not have the above documentation ancestry may be proven by submitting a front and back copy of their parent\xe2\x80\x99s status, citizenship, membership, registration, or enrolment card and the student\xe2\x80\x99s long form birth certificate or baptismal certificate. Both documents must list the student\xe2\x80\x99s name and the parent\xe2\x80\x99s name showing the link between the student and the parent.
