Primary function

Job Title: 2024 2L Summer Law Student - Criminal & Family

Assignment: Summer 2024 (May - August)
Compensation: $19.00/Hour
Home Location: Belleville
Secondary/tertiary Location: Kingston, Napanee

Reporting to: Steven Starbuck, Manager of Legal Services

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) offers law students a gateway to a varied and rewarding career in the social justice field. Key accountabilities

As a summer student in Kingston, Napanee and/or Belleville, you will be involved in matters that may include:

  • Duty counsel services in criminal court: interview accused, contact and verify sureties, conduct surety interviews, act as intermediary between duty counsel and private counsel or Crowns, facilitate interviews for duty counsel, conduct guilty plea interviews, assist with set-date court, and assisting with weekend and statutory holiday (WASH) court.
  • Duty counsel services in family court: help unrepresented clients draft applications, affidavits and motions, prepare lists of cases, summaries of cases and case books that could be accessed by duty counsel, observe courtroom presentations and assist with client meetings.

Required skills & experience
  • Student of recognized law school
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice or public interest work
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of the Legal Aid Ontario\'s mandate and services
  • Ability to work independently, solve complex problems, build relationships, and work with teams
  • Experience in providing client service to marginalized populations such as racialized communities, youth, and those experiencing mental health or addiction challenges and/or homelessness
  • French language skills are a preferred asset.
  • Valid Driver\'s license and access to transportation
