Up to 1 temporary full-time Summer Student opportunity for up to 4 Months

The Legal Services Branch within the City of Edmonton has an opportunity for a motivated Indigenous Law Student with a keen interest in public sector law. The City of Edmonton\xe2\x80\x99s Legal Services Branch acts as a full-service law firm for the City, which employs over 10,000 employees and has a total budget in excess of $1.2 billion. Virtually all legal work for the City is handled in-house by Legal Services lawyers. The assistance of an Indigenous Law Student in a summer student position will provide valuable support to the lawyers in the Legal Services Branch and increase diversity in order to better reflect the community that the Legal Services Branch serves.

As a summer student with the City of Edmonton, you will have an opportunity to work in all areas covered by the Legal Services Branch, including:

  • Commercial and real estate transactions
  • Finance and investment
  • Expropriation law
  • Bylaw drafting
  • Tendering and procurement
  • Corporate structure and governance issues
  • Personal injury litigation
  • Real property litigation
  • Construction litigation
  • Bylaw challenges, enforcement, and prosecutions
  • Assessment and taxation; and
  • Labour relations, employment and OH&S advising/hearings
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled as a 1st year student in a Faculty of Law program at an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Strong legal research skills and computer literacy
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to work independently with confidence under time constraints
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent verbal, negotiating, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability using Google Workspace applications
  • Student Legal Services experience, particularly court experience, would be an asset

*Pursuant to Law Society Rules, the City will consider summer students as candidates for articling with the City of Edmonton.

*All applicants will need to provide a cover letter, resume, and university transcripts, and the names of two references, along with proof that you are enrolled in the 2022-2023 Academic Year.

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Salary: $19.749 - $25.135 Hourly
