About the program/department/team


Gdoo-maawnjidimi Mompii Indigenous Student Services offers culturally supportive programs and initiatives to First Nations, Inuit and Metis students at TMU, ensuring access to specialized services that strike a balance between academic excellence and traditional teachings and culture.


Our name Gdoo-maawnjidimi Mompii means "We Gather Here", representing how the team brings together support services, programs and the Indigenous Student Centre under one roof in service of Indigenous students.


The university strives to foster positive relationships with the Indigenous community through the work of the Indigenous Education Council (IEC), Indigenous Student Services, and Indigenous Initiatives within the Office of the Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion (OVPECI).

Make an impact as an Indigenous Student Outreach Officer with Gdoo-maawnjidimi Mompii Indigenous Student Services (GMISS), where you will help strengthen relationships with Indigenous students and communities while advancing GMISS' mission! This short-term opportunity allows you to apply your knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, traditions, and protocols to foster meaningful connections within TMU and the broader Toronto Indigenous community.


Reporting to the Indigenous Program Manager, you will lead outreach efforts that promote GMISS' programs, services and events, collaborate with campus partners to create seamless student support, and design targeted recruitment strategies for Indigenous programs. You will also represent GMISS and the university on and off-campus to enhance visibility and attract First Nations, Inuit, and Metis students.


This is a four (4) month position requiring regular onsite presence.


Qualifications


To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:


Candidates must self-identify as Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit or Metis Peoples, or Indigenous peoples of North America, preferably with a strong commitment to and knowledge of Indigenous knowledge, methodologies and experience in collaborating with Indigenous students, organizations and communities. Successful completion of a post-secondary degree program or 4 years of specialized training is required to develop the ability to organize, analyze, and synthesize complex information and concepts. Minimum of three (3) years of related experience is required, preferably in a postsecondary educational environment developing and conducting aboriginal student outreach programming and recruitment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience in developing, coordinating and conducting presentations, events, and tours; and effectively working with a variety of clients required. Experience researching, compiling, data analysis, and presenting statistical and other reports and both analytical and research writing is preferred. Ability to develop contacts/partnerships in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous educational settings. Knowledge of and sensitivity to the cultures and values of Indigenous peoples. Knowledge of and proven ability to utilize Indigenous world views, teachings, traditions and protocols. Knowledge of the Indigenous Toronto community. Knowledge of educational issues/barriers faced by Indigenous students/youth and adult learners (Indigenous educational history, Treaty rights, existing educational funding systems - First Nations, Metis and Inuit associations, Bill C-31 and Indigenous Affairs). Knowledge of Indigenous issues (i.e. social, political and economic). Excellent oral and written communication, presentations and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge and experience in Indigenous data gathering and report writing.Exemplary level of professionalism and client-service focus. Strong organizational and administrative skills Advanced proficiency in using computers and the web; Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Gmail); MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); presentation, word processing, spreadsheet and calendar management software; student information systems (RAMSS is an asset); and social media channels. Valid Driver's License in good standing and clean driver's abstract and a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) may be required
Responsibilities


Develops, coordinates and participates in outreach activities and represents TMU during these activities both in-person and virtually online. Collaborates with TMU colleagues in building their awareness and works with them to create seamless support between GMISS and wider TMU support services, programming and events. Coordinates and/or participates in on-campus liaison events. Creates targeted recruitment strategies for TMU's Indigenous Foundations program and the School of Continuing Education's Indigenous Knowledges and Experiences Certificate Program for existing Indigenous students at TMU, and the broader Toronto Indigenous community members Conducts research, data analysis, develops statistical, and other reports. May be required to work beyond regular work hours for events, etc. Performs other duties/special projects as required.
