S&R Sawmills has a long history of Custom Cutting in the Lower Mainland. We are a family run business that was established in 1963 and currently have a workforce of over 300 employees on a large strip of the Fraser River. We are seeking an experienced and proactive Human Resources Generalist to support our team. Reporting directly to the Vice President, the HR Generalist is responsible for leading and executing a wide range of HR programs and initiatives across all areas of the business -- including recruitment, training, employee relations, policy administration, and disability management.
Role Description
This is a hands-on role that requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to balance day-to-day operations with long-term strategic goals. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic industrial environment and serve as the primary HR contact for all employees and managers across our operations.
Duties & Responsibilities
Recruitment, Training & Development
Manage full-cycle recruitment.
Coordinate onboarding and new hire orientation.
Support training and succession initiatives for key mill roles.
Maintain employee documentation and HR records accurately and confidentially.
Employee Relations & Engagement
Advise and support supervisors and managers on performance management, coaching, and progressive discipline.
Conduct or assist in employee investigations and conflict resolution.
Lead employee engagement initiatives and recognition programs to promote retention and positive workplace culture.
Policy, Compliance & HR Systems
Maintain and update the Employee Handbook and HR policies, ensuring alignment with employment standards and company values.
Participate in the ongoing development and implementation of the UKG HRIS system; UKG implementation experience is a strong asset.
Collaborate with health and safety, payroll, and production departments to ensure consistent policy application and compliance across sites.
Disability & Claims Management
Oversee WorkSafeBC claims and appeals, acting as the main point of contact between employees, managers, medical providers, and claim owners.
Administer Short-Term and Long-Term Disability (STD/LTD) cases with Canada Life, including coordination of return-to-work (GRTW) programs.
Track and communicate employee leave status to relevant departments.
Strategic & Administrative Support
Assist with the development of HR strategies to support recruitment, retention, and succession planning.
Prepare and manage employment contracts, HR communications, and correspondence.
Participate in safety management system reviews and policy updates.
Support leadership in handling legal, regulatory, and employment-related matters.
Coordinate onboarding and new hire orientation.
Support training and succession initiatives for key mill roles.
Maintain employee documentation and HR records accurately and confidentially.
Qualifications and Skills
Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or a related field.
Minimum 3-5 years of progressive HR experience, preferably within manufacturing, industrial, or construction sectors.
Strong understanding of WorkSafeBC claims processes and return-to-work coordination.
Experience implementing or maintaining an HRIS system; UKG Ready or UKG Pro experience is preferred.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
Proven ability to manage confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail.
High emotional intelligence and the ability to navigate sensitive employee situations with professionalism and empathy.
CPHR designation (or working toward it) considered an asset.
