St. John's Homestead Inc. (Homestead NL) is a non-profit organization that provides housing support and outreach to individuals and families referred through the emergency shelter system. We believe that housing is a fundamental right, and we focus on person-centered solutions to service gaps with an emphasis on Housing First, Harm Reduction, and Trauma-Informed Care.

Position Overview



Homestead NL is seeking a

Housing Specialist (HS)

to join our team. Reporting to the Program Manager, the Housing Specialist plays a key role in helping participants secure and maintain stable housing while offering support that promotes long-term success.

This role involves direct client service, relationship-building with landlords and community partners, and proactive engagement in housing solutions that reflect the diverse needs of our community. The ideal candidate understands trauma-informed care and anti-oppressive practice and excels at building meaningful connections while maintaining professional boundaries. This position works primarily within the emergency shelter system and also within the broader community.

Key Responsibilities



Manage a caseload of participants within the emergency shelter system Meet with individuals and families to assess housing needs and develop personalized housing plans Build and maintain strong relationships with landlords, property managers, and community partners to increase housing opportunities Provide ongoing follow-up support to promote housing stability Collaborate with team members on complex cases Advocate for participants navigating housing systems, benefits, and supports Uphold high standards of ethics, care, and confidentiality Maintain accurate records, data entry, and documentation Attend referral meetings Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications



Experience supporting people experiencing homelessness and/or other marginalized populations In-depth knowledge of housing systems, landlord/tenant rights, and local community resources in St. John's Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-risk environment using sound judgment and critical thinking Proficient in working both independently and in a team setting Strong crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills Reliable vehicle for daily use and ability to transport participants Satisfactory Record of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check

Assets



Lived experience of housing insecurity Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) Overdose response training Current First Aid/CPR certification Other relevant education, training, or certifications

Compensation



Full-time (Monday-Friday) contract position until March 31, 2026, with opportunity for extension Starting salary: $60,000 annually Generous leave entitlements and benefits Flexible work environment
