Position Profile:
The Housing Specialist will empower and guide youth towards achieving their housing goals by providing ongoing support with housing resources and navigation, advocating on behalf of the youth, and establishing and maintaining relationships with landlords, housing providers and community partners to expand housing options for youth.
Role Overview:
Meet with youth to formalize their housing plan and to identify housing options that align with the youth's needs.
Work with the young person on their housing search, landlord engagement plan, community orientation and integration, and budgeting.
Provide housing support by facilitating housing related workshops, exploring rent subsidy options, teaching life skills to build capacity and connecting youth to local services.
Assist with referrals, the rental application process and coordinate services during their transition to independent housing.
Support the youth in attending housing appointments and act as their liaison to ease barriers to housing, monitor quality control and screen for suitability related to health and safety standards.
Build and establish relationships with landlords and expand our landlord/housing registry.
Network and reach out to new and existing housing providers and landlords to develop and maintain relationships to secure specific units for young people.
Work with partners to share weekly affordable housing listings.
Source new partnerships and supplies for affordable furniture and household items to assist the youth in transition
Complete community mapping with the youth to identify appropriate referrals, recreational, educational, occupational, and vocational activities to support successful community integration
Ensure the soft transfer of information and determine level of needs and supports are in place to be successful with their housing.
+ Develop, enhance, and foster community partnerships and collaboration in support of the program.
+ Collaborate with staff to ensure that the appropriate level of support is being provided to the youth to build their capacity and skills for independent living.
+ Compile statistical information and prepare monthly reports as required for program evaluation and development.
+ Participate on committees and task forces as required with other agencies addressing issues facing youth.
+ Create a safe and secure setting for all youth accessing services at the transitional program.
+ Ensure that professional standards are maintained as related to client documentation and case management.
+ Ensure that the facility meets health and safety standards.
+ Foster a positive and supportive working environment.
+ All other duties as required in the successful management of shelter operations while partnering with all stakeholders in support of organizational success.
Qualifications:
Child & Youth Worker degree, University degree or equivalent in related social services field.
Experience within the social service sector supporting youth experiencing homelessness with securing and maintain housing.
Cultural competency sensitivity and commitment to working through an EDIB, anti- oppressive, anti-racism framework.
Knowledge of trauma informed care, landlord engagement and eviction prevention an asset.
Understanding of issues relating to youth homelessness and the barriers youth face in attaining and maintaining housing.
Knowledge of resources within the Region of Peel, specifically for youth.
Effective problem solving, conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
G class license with clean driving record.
Valid CPI/UMAB and First Aid/CPR certifications.
Completion of a successful Vulnerable Sector Check/Criminal Record Check will be a condition of employment.
Fully vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to applicable legislation.
