HORTICULTURAL WORKER

CLASSIFICATION: Agricultural Worker 1

COMPENSATION GROUP: OPSEU - Operational & Maintenance

SALARY RANGE: $22.69 to $24.50 per hour

PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: April to December
Group 3 seasonal recurring

HOURS OF WORK: 36.25 hours per week

DIVISION: Maintenance and Operations

LOCATION: Maintenance Building, 11 km east of Morrisburg

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO DO IN THIS ROLE?

You will:

  • Carry out a wide variety of landscape duties, including the following:
  • Grade park areas in preparation for lawn seeding, seed and/or sod newly graded areas, and repair damaged lawns;
  • Prepare flower beds and shrubs during the planting season, transplant flowers, and provide minor pruning service;
  • Plant trees and seedlings within the parks;
  • Fertilize lawns and trees throughout the parks;
  • Operate various pieces of equipment such as front-end loaders and attachments (disc harrow, land plane, York rake), dump trailer, landscape trailer, chainsaws, etc.
  • Support forestry and greenhouse operations.
  • Provide a pest and disease control program by spraying pesticides.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

HOW DO I QUALIFY?

MANDATORY:
  • Possession of a Landscape Exterminator Pesticide license

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
You have:
  • Knowledge, acquired through experience and/or formal training, of horticultural and landscape techniques and the application and use of pesticides, including the operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act as it applies to the work being performed.

CUSTOMER SERVICE, COMMUNICATION AND TEAMWORK SKILLS:
You have:
  • Communication skills to relate information to staff and customers.
  • Teamwork skills to work in a team environment to coordinate work activities and deliver services within established timeframes.
  • Personal commitment to excellent customer service.

OTHER ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
You have:
  • The ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • The ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • The physical ability to perform a variety of landscaping duties such as lifting stones, raking, levelling soil, cutting, and laying sod, mowing grass, etc.
