The Opportunity

We are looking for a Health & Safety Program Specialist to join our Health & Safey team. Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, this role requires an individual with a strong technical acumen in the field of Health & Safety, as well as an ability to work with the Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) team and the broader organization to align priorities and plans with key business objectives. In this role, you must excel at driving change with strong project coordination or project management experience, as well as a phenomenal stakeholder and documentation management skills.

As a Health & Safety Program Specialist you will:

  • Comply with ethical, professional, and legal requirements based on NS Power policies and procedures, as well as Federal and Provincial legislative regulations.
  • Support Health & Safety vendor management (e.g. system, testing vendors) and ensure proper authorization, work completion and compliance to service level requirements (e.g. RFIs, RFPs, contract acceptance, change orders, etc.). Maintain contract schedule and ensure contracts remain up to date.
  • As the SharePoint and Microsoft Teams site champion, you are accountable to design and maintain H&S sites to support communication / access to important information and maintain information on the Grid.
  • Help develop and enforce documentation/ data design, review, and storage guidelines and reinforce compliance requirements with stakeholders (team and across business).
  • System administrator for critical Health & Safety systems, with oversite for maintaining system integrity, troubleshooting issues, assigning permissions, and ensuring system stability working with internal/ external stakeholders and product owners.
  • Work on strategic projects as part of project team to deliver on system and program enhancements as outlined in workplans for health & safety team.
  • Coordinate / track activities related to project and Change Management plans to support implementation of new initiatives across the team and organization.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage a document retention/ change management system to record changes to official documents and confirm changes with key stakeholders.
  • Facilitate and work with Safe Work Practices and PPE committees to support deliver of work within SMS system and work within scope of committee terms of reference.
  • Assist in determining /documenting policies to facilitate secure access to systems and electronic content for the Health and Safety team
  • Support the revision of documents supporting implementation of the Safety Management System and Health programs \xe2\x80\x93 policies, procedures, forms, work instructions and manuals.
  • Support drafting / revising the NSP Safety Management System documentation and ensure alignment of existing procedures against program requirements and Emera standards. This includes revising and developing JSAs & SWPs, and other documentation to support identification and control of hazards.
  • Work with communications team to develop and implement process and procedures for different categories of health and safety communications.
  • Work with H&S team to draft and roll out regular (weekly) health and safety communications to drive health and safety performance and culture across the organization, working in close coordination with the Data & Analytics Specialist
  • Provide training and support team members with using project and change management tools.
  • Follow up on outstanding corrective actions in the incident reporting database to ensure the follow through and resolution of action items
  • Track/ monitor progress of open investigations, including JOHSC investigations.
  • Support auditing activities by working in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support health & safety and storm activities in field as needed.

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s/College degree in a related field.
  • 3-5 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in Health and Safety.
  • CRSP or similar designation is preferred.
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks effectively, prioritize requests, and adapt well to change.
  • Strong attention to detail, management of deadlines, and accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Highly organized, with a working understanding of change management.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Office. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is essential.
  • Experience working with SharePoint is essential.
  • You bring a collaborative problem-solving approach with the ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability be inquisitive while building trust with internal and external stakeholders.
