Position Summary:
As the HSE Business Partner, you will act as a trusted advisor and subject matter expert to operational leaders, supporting the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of health, safety, and environmental programs. You will play a key role in anticipating, evaluating, and monitoring health and safety risks and regulatory compliance relevant to chemical manufacturing while providing hands-on H&S leadership to site operations.
This is an onsite role that requires close collaboration with the operations, engineering and maintenance teams. A regular presence on the plant floor is essential for your success.
As a team member, you can expect to:
Health & Safety
Own and maintain the HSE Management System, ensuring it is regularly updated, user-friendly, and supports effective reporting
Identify the need for, develop, and implement pro-active programs to support best practices in the establishment of a safe and healthy work environment.
Provide guidance, support and education on risk assessments, incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
Conduct regular site inspections, audits, and job hazard analyses to ensure safe work practices.
Monitor compliance with Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and other relevant legislation.
Develop and deliver H&S training and safety communications that create 'safety engagement' amongst employees, supervisors and contractors.
Maintain accurate records of safety metrics, training, incidents, and inspections.
Partner with site leadership to drive continuous safety improvement and behavioral safety initiatives.
Track and analyze safety KPIs and trends; provide insights to management for risk mitigation and program improvements.
Environment
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations including air, water, and waste management (e.g., MECP, ECA, NPRI).
Coordinate hazardous materials and chemical waste disposal according to applicable legislation.
Support environmental reporting and sustainability initiatives (e.g., GHG reporting, spill response plans).
Partnership & Leadership
Act as a liaison with external HSE regulatory agencies, consultants, and contractors.
Coach and support frontline supervisors and teams in safety leadership and accountability.
Contribute to emergency response planning and participate as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Coordinate with Operations and People & Culture to ensure the early and safe return to work for injured / ill employees. Develop accommodation and modify work plans as needed.
What we're looking for:
Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety.
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), or equivalent certification preferred.
Minimum 5 years of HSE experience in a chemical manufacturing or industrial setting.
Strong knowledge of OHSA and Regulations, WSIA, CEPA, and MECP regulations.
Familiarity with ISO 45001 or similar safety management systems preferred.
Experience with risk assessments, audits, root cause analysis, and adult learning.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Velocity EHS and SharePoint.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to influence and collaborate across levels.
Valid driver's license required.
Working Conditions:
Primarily on-site at a chemical manufacturing facility with occasional travel between sites.
Exposure to chemical processing areas, requiring use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols.
May participate in on-call or emergency response rotation.
