WHAT THE ROLE IS ALL ABOUT!
Reporting to the Operations Lead, Health, Safety and Environment, the Lead, Health, Safety & Environment, is responsible for guiding and mentoring the HSE team while promoting and upholding company values and standards. This role focuses on delivering effective safety training, supporting project teams in achieving compliance, and fostering a culture of safety across all job sites. A background in General Contracting is required, with the ability to navigate the unique demands of diverse construction environments. This is a field-based position that will work on a rotational schedule where camp accommodations are provided. This role will be based out of Northern Ontario and/or Northern Manitoba.
ESSENTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS WE NEED FROM YOU!
Assist in developing a best-in-class safety program.
Mentor, monitor performance, and conduct monthly one-on-one meetings with direct reports
Ensure sites are appropriately staffed, either by direct reports or self.
Collaborate with direct supervisor to proactively assess staffing needs, recommend workforce adjustments, and manage transitions to maintain operational efficiency and safety.
Deploy and delegate HSE resources effectively across multiple sites, including travel and accommodation logistics.
Attend weekly meetings with the Director, Health, Safety, & Environmental to review team and site performance.
Liaise with clients and engage with community and stakeholder groups to positively represent Sigfusson Northern and promote the company's HSE program and initiatives.
Foster respectful relationships in northern communities and ensuring alignment with client expectations and cultural values.
Recommend departmental policies and procedures to direct supervisor with the intention to improve HSE operations.
Collaborate with assigned project teams to manage risks and ensure compliance.
Provide guidance to site employees and contractors on safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
Oversee the site Occupational Health and Safety Committee
Assist with specialized training for site supervisors and general safety education for employees.
Manage emergency response plans and update them as needed.
Evaluate, maintain, and update the hazard assessment process.
Update procedures, safe work practices, and emergency response plans.
Contribute to corporate HSE program improvement and continuous improvement initiatives.
Conduct inspections, orientations, audits, and safety meetings.
Complete safety investigations when required.
Maintain and enhance the COR program.
Communicate with Workplace Health and Safety and the Ministry of Labour as required.
Complete JSAs and risk registers.
Maintain daily, weekly, and monthly safety statistics and records.
Prepare weekly and monthly safety reports.
Use SiteDocs, Training Grounds, and analytics tools for compliance monitoring and performance tracking
Ensure an actor is named and delegated to be back-up for when on days off.
Ensure adherence to all SNL policies, procedures, and the QMS system.
WHAT WILL MAKE YOU A POSITIVE IMPACT?
Established experience in a high-volume safety position and applicable construction industry.
Proven experience mentoring and leading a small to medium sized team.
Minimum completion of a Health, Safety, & Environmental certificate.
Proven successful completion of the NCSO designation program.
Completion of the CRSP designation will be considered an asset.
Prioritizes the health, safety, quality, and environmental standards of the employees, company, project environments and strives to hold a strong safety record.
Thorough understanding of heavy civil construction and willingness to learn about additional industries to enhance business operations.
Proven experience building and facilitating training programs.
Confidence to present and clearly communicate training programs in large group settings.
Able to establish credibility with all project leaders and employees, along with senior management and executive.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage, mentor, motivate, and develop a team.
The ability to promote and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures effectively and professionally.
Understand the importance of collaboration with various departments to ensure success for the entire company.
Lead by example and influence direct reports to always do the same.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, always changing environment, which requires critical thinking and last-minute priority adjustments.
Assess, listen, understand, and transform internal and external client expectations into solutions and plans.
Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback, and the ability to manage and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
Capable of being involved in resolving employee conflicts and recognizes when to escalate issues to direct supervisor and/or People & Culture.

Ability to create effective documentation and training materials using MS Office platforms (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Confidence and ability to manage risks and stop activities when risks escalate.
Tactful skills to balance production efficiency and safety compliance.
Must be able to present a clear security clearance check and pass an alcohol & drug test prior to commencing employment and if required, throughout employment.
A valid driver's license is required.
