The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a HSE Advisor to join our Exploration team in Thompson. This is a permanent position.

The HSE Advisor will provide support to ensure that all Vale Canada Limited Exploration programs in Thompson operate within the boundaries established by the applicable Acts, Regulations and Codes as well as the company policy. This will include managing and tracking the Safety Management System, tracking changes in the legislation, facilitating project risk assessments and work planning, and evaluating contractor prequalification and training. In addition to project level activities, the HSE Advisor will also lead incident investigations, analyze trends in key performance indicators, report all OHS activities on a monthly basis and coordinate safety initiatives.

Requirements & Accountabilities:

  • Oversee HSEC programs in Thompson for Vale's Canadian Exploration Department.
  • Ensure operational and procedural compliance with the Health and Safety Act and applicable Regulations and Codes.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to management on safety, health, environment and community relation issues
  • Lead/facilitate all high severity incident investigations using Root Cause Analysis methodology and report findings internally in SAP-IM following Vale's instructional documents.
  • Monitor and report on an ongoing basis leading and lagging HSE indicators.
  • Responsible for implementing Vale's Safety Management System.
  • Design and run Emergency Response Drills. Identify any gaps and ensure resources are made available for the protection of the workers.
  • Develop safe work procedures based on needs identified through on-going risk assessments.
  • Lead risk assessment workshops for projects at their inception.
  • Maintain project Risk Assessments and update them as the scope of work changes or in the event of an incident.
  • Ensure risks are managed based on risk assessment outcomes, assessing the exposure, managing the risks, and monitoring the effectiveness of controls.
  • Compile Legal Requirement Registries for all exploration projects.
  • Identify, develop and implement training programs for Vale Exploration Canada's Thompson office based on applicable regulations, corporate requirements, and job requirements
  • Complete contractor prequalification and screening, monitor contractors Health and Safety programs and complete frequent inspections of contractor worksites.
  • Plan and implement Corporate Safety Initiatives
  • Advocate for the Internal Responsibility System (IRS).
  • Assist with HSE audits including the implementation of Action Plans to address non-compliance items.
  • Assist with contractor HSE management.
  • Travel will be required occasionally as needed
About You:
  • Community College diploma/degree preferred
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred
  • 5-10 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, planning, organizational and time management skills
