Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, the
Health & Safety Advisor
provides guidance, coaching, and support to ensure compliance with legislation, standards, and best practices while helping to build a strong safety culture. They will work closely with management, employees, and external stakeholders to identify hazards, reduce risks, and promote safe work practices across all operations.
Responsibilities
Facilitate orientation and onboarding training, coordinate and deliver ongoing health and safety training programs.
Participate in and/or lead Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings.
Conduct site inspections and audits (including occasional night and weekend visits), and prepare required health, safety, and environmental reports.
Review incident and inspection reports, ensuring corrective actions are identified, tracked, and completed.
Support development and implementation of Safe Work Practices, Job Hazard Analyses, and other safety documentation, ensuring availability for supervisors and workers.
Advise, coach, and support management and supervisors on health and safety requirements and best practices including OHSA, Industrial & Construction Regulations, WHMIS, Fall Protection, Traffic Control, Machine Guarding, PPE, Cranes and Lifting Devices, First Aid, Fire Protection, Emergency Response, Noise, etc.
Conduct or assist with investigations, supporting resolution of safety issues through the Internal Responsibility System (IRS).
Support WSIB claims and return-to-work initiatives through collaboration with management, employees, and healthcare providers.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Health, Safety and Environment program and assist with the maintenance of accreditations.
Maintain company emergency equipment inventory (first aid kits, fire extinguishers, etc.).
Participate in associations and benchmarking activities to remain current with emerging trends and best practices.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
3-5 years of progressive experience in Occupational Health & Safety, ideally in construction.
Degree or Diploma in OH&S, Health, Safety & Environmental Management, Safety Engineering, or related discipline (strongly preferred).
Strong knowledge of OHSA, workers' compensation, and construction industry safety standards.
Demonstrated experience supporting COR (Certification of Recognition) and ISO 45001 certifications is an asset.
Professional designations such as CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent are considered an asset.
Strong communication, coaching, and presentation skills; able to confidently engage with groups of all sizes.
Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to foster a positive safety culture.
Proficient with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint).
Physically able to access construction sites in all weather conditions and traverse rough terrain as required.
Willing and able to attend occasional nighttime and/or weekend site visits.
Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
