provides consultative advice and technical support to project(s), facility management and the RP Program;
develops and implements elements of the Radiation Protection (RP) compliance program; and
Performs specific functions of a radiation safety officer.
DUTIES
Operational health physics services for assigned facilities and projects:
Development and implementation of RP controls, processes and procedures
Complete radiological safety and dose assessments
Perform ALARA and post-work ALARA assessments and reviews
Review design documents
Review and approve requests to release material and personnel involved in contamination events out of the Controlled Area
Approve transfer of packages exceeding default limits during off-shifts
Document justification and ALARA reviews for exceptions to RP Program requirements for review and approval by the RP Program Manager
Complete reviews for pregnancy declaration and medical needs
Preparation, review and/or approve of radiological work plans/procedures, radioisotope laboratory protocol, employee dose control points, indoor radioactive material storage areas
Respond to, investigate, and perform follow up of RP related unplanned events
Technical health physics services:
Review the selection and procurement of radiation and contamination measuring and monitoring equipment.
Provide recommendation on scoping, characterization and release radiological surveys consistent with the RP Program
Complete shielding calculations
Oversee the design or modification of facilities to ensure doses to workers are ALARA
Provide training and presentations on RP topics
Successfully attain and maintain RP Group 1 qualification training
Providing RP program management and oversight:
Prepare, review and/or revise radiation protection procedures and RP training material
Prepare or participate in annual RP program annual compliance reviews
Provide HP technical support in support of RP Program development and establishment of requirements
Assist in developing, implementing and maintaining radiation protection performance models and metrics.
Complete Apparent Cause Analysis's, Effectiveness reviews, and fact find reports as required.
Monitor RP related non-conformances and corrective actions
Performing RP compliance inspections
Attend meetings e.g. weekly operation HP alignment, MST, MRM
Radiation safety officer services and management:
Reviewing and approval radiation source registration and records, radiation source leak testing, food and beverage rooms.
QUALIFICATIONS Education
A Bachelors (Honour) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing (e.g. nuclear engineering, medical health physics); or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization;
Experience
Related scientific working experience would be an asset in radiation protection instrumentation, gamma spectroscopy, or radiation physics.

Ability to correctly interpret and decisions based on established requirements, procedures and practices.

Knowledge of recommendations and guidelines of radiological protection standards
Knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment and techniques used both in theory and practice
Knowledgeable in radiation protection instrumentation, gamma spectroscopy, and radiation physics.
