Our Chalk River location is looking for a Health Physicist to provide management, oversight, technical services and support for our Radiation Protection Program.

What will you be doing !

  • Preparing, reviewing and/or revising radiation protection procedures and RP training material.
  • Preparing or participating in RP program compliance reviews and assessments.
  • Providing HP technical support in support of RP Program development and establishment of requirements.
  • Assisting in developing, implementing and maintaining radiation protection performance models and metrics. Experience with PowerBI and SharePoint would be an asset.
  • Completing Apparent Cause Analysis\xe2\x80\x99s, Effectiveness reviews, and fact-finding reports as required.
  • Monitoring and trending RP related non-conformances and corrective actions. Make recommendations on performance improvements as required.
  • Performing RP compliance inspections at various sites/facilities as assigned.
  • Attending meetings e.g. weekly operation HP alignment meetings, program meeting, radiation safety committee.
  • Reviewing and approving radiation source registration and records, radiation source leak testing, food and beverage rooms.
  • Reviewing the selection and procurement of radiation and contamination measuring and monitoring equipment.
  • Providing recommendations on scoping, characterization and release radiological surveys consistent with the RP Program.
  • Completing shielding calculations.
  • Overseeing the design or modification of facilities to ensure doses to workers are ALARA (As low as reasonably achievable)
  • Providing training and presentations on RP topics.
  • Developing and implementing of RP controls, processes and procedures.
  • Successfully attain and maintain RP Group 1 qualification training within 2 years.
  • Completing radiological safety and dose assessments.
  • Performing ALARA and post-work ALARA assessments and reviews.
  • Reviewing design documents.
  • Reviewing and approving requests to release material and personnel involved in contamination events out of the Controlled Area.
  • Approving transfer of packages exceeding default limits during off-shifts.
  • Documenting justification and ALARA reviews for exceptions to RP Program requirements for review and approval by the RP Program Manager.
  • Completing reviews for pregnancy declaration and medical needs.
  • Preparing, reviewing and/or approving of radiological work plans/procedures, radioisotope laboratory protocol, employee dose control points, indoor radioactive material storage areas.
  • Responding to, investigating, and performing follow up of RP related unplanned events.
  • Working with RP field staff to help ensure safe work execution, providing mentorship and help implement RP Program requirements
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

  • Proven scientific technical writing is essential.
  • Mature outlook and proven good judgement.
  • Demonstrates analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written skills applied to writing reports and correspondences in English (French would be an asset but not required).
  • Effective public speaking applied to the delivery of training and presentations related to highly technical information to audiences with varying levels of knowledge about radiation protection. May need to delivery of pre- and post-job briefs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment.
  • Understands the need to seek and welcome peer feedback with the goal of continuous improvement.
  • Strong ability to multi-task and prioritize work to meet objectives and targets and demonstrates good use of time.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to respect confidential employee information (e.g. pregnancy status, bioassay results, dose information etc.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft software (i.e., MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
  • Ability to correctly interpret and decisions based on established requirements, procedures and practices.
  • Project Management skills including the use of Microsoft Projects and/or Primavera would be an asset.
  • Able to provide cost effective solution while ensuring doses remain ALARA, social and economic factors while taking into consideration.
  • Is able to think out of the box to solve new radiological problems and challenges.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) acts and associated regulations and regulatory guidance. Extensive experience implementing CNSC requirements at a complex CNSC licensed facility is essential. Experience at a Class I and II nuclear facility is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Canadian and international RP organizations and their role in developing standards and guidance at the international level. Including International Commission for Radiation Protection (ICRP) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA).
  • Knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment and techniques used both in theory and practice.
  • Knowledgeable in radiation protection instrumentation, gamma spectroscopy, and radiation physics.
  • Experience:
  • At least 3 years (36 months) experience in Radiation Protection as a health physics Related scientific working experience with technical writing is essential.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated environment, specifically the Canadian Nuclear environment, is an asset.
  • Experience in radiation protection instrumentation, gamma spectroscopy, nuclear physics would be an asset.
  • Experience in Audit/Inspections in the nuclear field would be considered an asset.
  • Education:
  • A Bachelors (Honour) in Engineering or Science from a university of recognized standing (e.g. nuclear engineering, medical health physics); or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Security clearance eligibility required: Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom.
Working Conditions :
  • Must be physically able to wear protective clothing and work in a hazardous environment after receiving sufficient training.
  • Must be adequately mobile to perform job walk downs in all weather conditions.
  • Office work environment or meeting rooms for the purposes of attending meeting or taking or delivering training.
  • Must be able to work in various environments including industrial, construction, indoor and outdoor in all weather conditions.
  • Capable of travel within Canada and internationally for the purposes of visiting other sites, training, industry benchmarking and consultation.
