St. John's Academy Shawnigan Lake, situated on a pristine location between the shores of Shawnigan Lake and the base of Mt. Baldy, provides an innovative approach to education for both day and boarding students. We have obtained authorization for the IB and have embraced the IB's teaching philosophy and mission. Located in southern Vancouver Island, our 29-acre day & boarding school campus is surrounded by fresh air and natural beauty.
Our school offers Grades 4-12 and has approximately 200 students with a faculty- student ratio of approximately 1:8. The Head of School will play an instrumental role in shaping our growing school's future.
The Head of School will perform all acts necessary to properly and efficiently manage the operations of the school, including but not limited to:
Embody, manifest and advocate the vision and mission of the school.
Ensuring a healthy school climate and culture amongst motivated colleagues.
Working with the Board of Directors to carry out established school policies; to review those policies and make recommendations for changes; to attend meetings, prepare reports, maintain board records, and keep the Board of Directors informed on all aspects of the school's operation.
Supervising and/or assisting with all other aspects of the school's operation, including (but not limited to) facilities maintenance and operation, food service, transportation, summer programs, development and fund raising, and alumni affairs.
Supervising all programs of the school (academic, athletic, ethical, and other extracurricular programs); to monitor curriculum, grading, testing, and reporting to parents; to prepare for and conduct periodic program evaluations; to submit reports to external agencies as required; to execute upon disciplinary policies and standards of conduct.
Supervising the preparation of preliminary and final budgets; to monitor income, expenditures, collections, and cash flow; to maintain appropriate financial records; to oversee the employee benefit program.
Supervising the admissions director in determining programs for the recruitment of students, including marketing and outreach, information dissemination, applicant testing and interviews and acceptance and decisions.
Representing the school to all of its constituents including neighbourhood, parents, students, alumni, business community, faculty, and staff.
Handling all matters regarding employment, retention and dismissal, of personnel; salaries and contracts; job assignments and performance evaluation; and orientation and training. To assist in the preparation of employee handbooks and maintain appropriate personnel records.
Representing the school in its relations with provincial and federal agencies and with local, provincial, regional and national educational organizations and accrediting agencies.
Supervising and/or assist with all other aspects of the school's operation, including (but not limited to) facilities maintenance and operation, food service, transportation, summer programs, development and fund raising, and alumni affairs.
Initiate, co-develop, and monitor short and long-term strategic goals related to the different domains of school operations (academics, dorms, operations, etc.)
Develop, in collaboration with HR, clear job descriptions, accountabilities, and evaluation tools for all staff.
Ensuring that the school meets all requirements for registration and continued good standing with the Ministry of Education.
Establishing and maintaining a standard of scholastic and extra-curricular achievement for the school's students which is acceptable to the School's Board of Directors.
Fulfilling all other responsibilities and functions the school may reasonably require of a Head of School to develop and continuously improve the school's operations as an institution of learning.
Education, Experience & Skills:
B.Ed. required, Master's degree is preferred
Possess a BC teachers' license and be in good standing or be able to obtain a BC teachers' license (professional or subject-restricted)
Legal ability to work in Canada without sponsorship
Passion for supporting young learners
