Grocery Team Lead
is responsible for planning and directing the day-to-day operations of the full grocery department, including
dried goods, dairy, frozen, and receiving
. This role requires strong leadership, excellent organizational skills, and proven experience in
ordering and inventory management
.
The Grocery Team Lead ensures that stock levels are properly maintained, products are merchandised effectively, and the team delivers exceptional customer service. They play a key role in mentoring grocery associates, resolving customer issues, and supporting upper management with operational insights.
Duties & Responsibilities
Oversee daily grocery operations across dried goods, dairy, frozen, and receiving
Lead and support grocery associates, including task prioritization, mentoring, and performance management
Place vendor orders, review invoices, and manage product flow to maintain accurate inventory and minimize waste
Monitor and manage ordering, inventory levels, and shrink/waste tracking
Merchandise product displays to optimize sales, visual appeal, and department standards
Provide direct customer support and coach the team to deliver excellent service
Handle product damages and credits according to company policy
Meet regularly with upper management to report on staffing, customer issues, merchandising opportunities, and forecasting needs
Lead HR-related functions within the department, including hiring, onboarding, training, and handling performance or disciplinary issues
Negotiate with suppliers regarding new products, promotional deals, samplings, and pricing opportunities
Work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, to ensure comprehensive oversight of department operations
Maintain Health and Safety standards as defined under the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Perform additional duties as required to support store and business needs
Skillset Requirements
5+ years of grocery industry experience, including 2+ years managing a team
Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with
ordering and inventory management
systems and processes
Food Safety Handlers Certification preferred
High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education an asset
Proficiency in MS Office, with the ability to learn new systems (ERP, CRM, ordering platforms, etc.)
Highly organized, innovative, and detail-oriented, with the ability to meet merchandising standards and deadlines
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to provide clear direction and feedback
Collaborative and adaptable leader who thrives in a dynamic team environment
Physically able to stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push, and pull items weighing up to 50 pounds
