Job Summary
The Faculty of Agriculture, Dalhousie University is a small research-intensive campus located in Truro, NS. Offering technical, undergraduate and graduate programs in agriculture, environment and related life and social science disciplines, the Faculty of Agriculture educates future leaders and generates knowledge and innovative solutions for healthy, sustainable societies. Reporting to the Outdoor Classroom and Landscape Manager, the Greenhouse Technician will provide technical services to the Faculty of Agriculture greenhouses which support students, faculty, researchers and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Organize and oversee greenhouses. This includes monitoring and adjustingtemperature, humidity, day length, etc.; ensuring areas are clean and ready for a range of activities; ordering supplies; and monitoring and maintaining large walk-in cold rooms, walk-in freezer, and growth chambers.
Grow and maintain plants for multiple courses as well as for the vegetable demonstration garden. This includes watering, fertilizing, washing pots, deadheading plants, and identifying and controlling pests and diseases.
Provide technical support for and during labs. This includes assisting instructors in developing technical aspects of laboratory manuals for students; helping to develop lab standard operating procedures; and preparing materials for labs.
Provide technical assistance to fourth year honours projects, masters student experiments/projects, and research experiments/projects in the greenhouses. Prepare greenhouses for projects or experiments. Track space usage and user fees.
Supervise student employees who water plants on weekends.
Note
The incumbent will be required to work in high humidity and high temperature conditions, particularly during the summer months. In addition, on a regular basis the incumbent will work with corrosive and explosive materials (e.g. fertilizers, pesticides), and be exposed to dust from plant media.
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
Diploma in Plant Science or related field plus approximately one to three years' relevant experience, including experience in greenhouses (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
Strong interpersonal, customer service and communication (verbal and written) skills as well as experience supervising students.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to use MS Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook).
Completion of Pesticide Applicator's License, Standard First Aid, WHMIS, and a valid NS Class 5 driver's license.
This position will require regularly lifting and moving large items weighing up to 100 lbs.
