Halifax Seed is Canada's oldest continuously operating, family-run seed company. Established in 1866, Halifax Seed is a leader in supplying vegetable and flower seed to gardeners across the country. We strive to provide great customer service to every person who walks through our door or calls us over the phone. We are looking for several sales associates who are passionate about gardening for the upcoming spring season.

We are hiring multiple candidates for 4 month full-time and part-time contracts. The period of employment will run from March until the end of June. Day, evening and weekend work will be required.

Reporting to the manager & assistant manager, retail store and garden center sales associates will be expected to perform all of the following duties:

• Customer service operations - ring in sales at cash, answer phones, greet customers, answer questions, take and fill orders.
• General retail duties - pricing, stocking, cleaning, merchandising.
• Yard pick-ups - load plants, soil, fertilizer and seed (up to 25kg/50lbs).
• Water, fertilize, and take care of plant material.
• Problem solve customer questions and help troubleshoot gardening projects.
• Maintain a well-rounded understanding of products on hand and topics such as plant care, pest and disease management, soil amendments, seed starting, and lawn care.

Qualifications

• Preference is given to candidates with degrees or work experience in the field of horticulture, plant science, agriculture, or landscaping. Relevant experience includes work in a garden centre or as a landscaper, gardener, farm labourer, greenhouse technician, or groundskeeper.
• Previous experience in retail and customer service preferred.
• Must be able to lift up to 25 kg (50lbs).
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with the public courteously and efficiently.
• Must be able to work well in a fast-paced environment and be able to prioritize tasks.

Successful applicants will be required to wear CSA approved work boots at all times and will be expected to work in various climactic conditions.
