Estimated Range of Hours of Work: 5 - 15 hours per week
Appointment Dates: August 29, 2022 - April 28, 2023

Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall guidance and supervision from the Department of Rhetoric, Writing & Communications, the Graduate Student Writing Assistant will be expected to perform the following duties in an online, and/or in-person environment:

  • Be trained in writing and teaching pedagogy, including auditing RHET 2500 Tutoring Writing T and Th 2:30 – 3:45 PM.
  • Meet with graduate faculty members to determine needs of students in their programs.
  • Research and develop expertise on graduate-specific genres.
  • Develop and present in-person and recorded workshops on writing for graduate students.
  • Work with faculty and other partners to facilitate workshops.
  • Promote workshops and develop guidance in graduate-level writing using social media and/or blogs.
  • Attend, as requested, graduate program orientation sessions.
  • Develop resources for UW graduate programs and graduate student writers.
  • Coach graduate students in becoming strong writers and editors of their own work.
  • Report on attendance, evaluate workshops, and make recommendations.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Normally a graduate, Honours, or an upper-level undergraduate student at the University of Winnipeg.
  • Completion of academic studies and/or a suitable combination of education and experience related to assigned duties.
  • Successful completion of required training.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to present information clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to interact empathetically with a wide variety of students.
  • Ability to provide effective and constructive feedback.
  • Ability to exercise judgement.
  • Ability to meet specified deadlines.
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.
Additional Requirements:
  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong social, networking, and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior organizational skills and multi-tasking skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Zoom, and Power Point.
  • Prior event planning and in-person and online tutoring experience would be an asset.
  • Prior experience developing tutorial videos would be an asset.
  • Recent alumni will be considered, but preference may be given to a new or current University of Winnipeg graduate student.
